Rosamund Pike Joins 'Wrath of the Titans' as Andromeda

Last year the admittedly awful Clash of the Titans remake bombarded viewers with horrendous 3D, convoluted character development and mediocre CGI. It was a mindless romp with some above-average action sequences that kept the remake from being a complete disaster – though it did end up on our list of Most Disappointing Films of 2010.

Warner Bros. is giving the Greek mythology-based franchise another shot in a sequel titled Wrath of the Titans. Though they’ve brought back some major characters, they decided to drop director Louis Leterrier for Battle: Los Angeles director Jonathan Liebesman.

Today it was announced that sultry actress Rosamund Pike (Surrogates, Die Another Day) will join the cast of Wrath of the Titans as Andromeda. She replaces Alexa Davalos from Clash of the Titans who was unable to return due to scheduling conflicts.

Liam Neeson (Unknown) and Sam Worthington (Avatar) are both confirmed to return for the sequel while Edgar Ramirez (The Bourne Ultimatum) and Toby Kebbell (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) are rumored to join as Ares and Agenor, respectively.  Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter) will reprise his role as Hades, Lord of the Underworld and Danny Huston (Robin Hood) will once again play Poseidon, King of the Sea. The beautiful Gemma Arterton will "resurrect" her role of the once cursed Io.

Greek character Princess Andromeda being sacrificed to the sea creature Cetus

No one involved with Wrath of the Titans has divulged any details regarding a possible story for the film, though the ending of the previous film didn’t really leave the door open to a sequel. This lack of any real story direction probably explains why the film has six writers attached – Travis Beachmen, Greg Berlanti, Phil Hay, David Johnson, Matt Manfredi and Dan Mazeau.

In classic Greek mythology, Perseus rescues the virgin Andromeda from the clutches of the sea creature Cetus who was sent forth by Poseiden as punishment for her mother’s, Queen Cassiopeia, arrogance and vanity. How is Andromeda offered as a sacrifice to Cetus? Why, chained completely naked to a rock by the sea of course! After Perseus rescues her, they fall in love, get married and have seven sons and one daughter together. Moving into the future and showing Perseus and Andromeda starting their life together while Hades tries to rule of the earth in darkness could be a possible story arc.

Wrath of the Titans is set to begin filming in March 2011 while the theatrical date is March 23rd, 2012.
