More times than not, the main romantic couple of a television show reunites and ends up together in the series finale, symbolizing true love and that those who are meant to be will always find their way back to each other. Think Jonah and Amy, Ross and Rachel, and Josh and Donna; these couples all made it work, despite years of hiding or suppressing their true feelings.

Every now and then, however, a character's arc will end with them back to being with a completely wrong match, and makes it seem as though all of their character growth was for nothing. Choosing to revisit failed relationships or pairing them off with another main character often results in confusion and disappointment among fans.

Riley & Lucas (Girl Meets World)

Lucas and Riley embracing in the 'Girl Meets World' series finale.

The 2014 reboot of Boy Meets World, appropriately titled Girl Meets World followed Cory and Topanga's teenage daughter Riley as she sought out to explore life -- and middle school.

After becoming instantly smitten with Lucas, a new boy in her class, Riley spends the short-lived series pining after him. A threat to their relationship in Season 2 comes in the form of Riley's best friend Maya, creating a love triangle that ultimately fizzles itself out. Riley and Lucas reunite and admit their feelings for each other, despite the more obvious chemistry between him and Maya.

Kevin & Nora (The Leftovers)

Kevin asks Nora to dance in "The Leftovers" series finale.

HBO's The Leftovers followed the lives of people who had been left behind after what seemed to be a rapture. Police sheriff Kevin Garvey and mom of two departed children Nora Durst find comfort in the arms of one another in Season 1 but go through many trials and tribulations as time goes on.

Nora eventually makes the decision to reunite with the departed at the end of the final season, but later returned to her life abandoned. Kevin finds her, and the two attempt to salvage their relationship 15 years after her leaving. While the two were a good balance in the beginning, it seems they want different things in Season 3, and is unrealistic that they would ever fully be on the same page.

April & Matthew (Grey's Anatomy)

April and Matthew decide to make things work, for real this time, in Season 14 as she bids farewell to Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital. They two wed and depart the show, an ending that viewers weren't entirely happy about, specifically those that hoped her and Jackson would find their way back to one another.

Aria & Ezra (Pretty Little Liars)

Aria and Ezra at their wedding.

Despite their questionable beginnings and the power struggle between Aria Montgomery and her former teacher Ezra Fitz, these two ended up marrying on Pretty Little Liars.

Though they were adults by the end of the series, it does seem like Aria and Ezra were two people that would have had better narratives parting ways. The fact that he was her teacher when they first met makes the relationship uncomfortable at times.

Rebecca & Miguel (This is Us)

Rebecca and Miguel in the present day on "This is Us".

In the second episode of This is Us, 'Grandma' and 'Grandpa' show up at Randall's door. Viewers expect to see an elderly Rebecca and Jack, and instead are shocked when Miguel is standing at Bec's side.

Fans quickly learned that the reason Rebecca and Jack are no longer together is because he died tragically two decades prior, however, the lack of explanation of her relationship with Jack's best friend Miguel raised quite a few eyebrows. 5 seasons later, with no episode explaining their marriage, this relationship remains unpopular.

Dan & Serena (Gossip Girl)

Dan and Serena getting married on "Gossip Girl".

From Dan and Serena's first encounter on Gossip Girl, there was an obvious chemistry between them, however, countless breakups and betrayals led to an exhaustion of their relationship, and wonderment if there was someone better suited for the both of them.

Despite their troubles, Dan and Serena marry in the final season, even after it is revealed that Dan is in fact, Gossip Girl. After writing about her for years, dating her best friend, and her ever-present attitude, there is no way these two would have realistically made it work out in the end.

Carrie & Mr. Big (Sex & The City)

Mr. Big and Carrie embracing in Sex and the City

Carrie Bradshaw's main love interest on Sex & The City was none other than Mr. Big, a wealthy businessman who is present through most of the series and the subsequent films.

Although he initially leaves her at the altar, Big's attempts to win Carrie back are successful, and the two end up marrying after all. Though their connection is undeniable, his fear of commitment and wavering loyalty gets tired pretty fast, and makes fans wonder if Carrie would've been happier with someone like Aiden after all.

Jackie & Fez (That '70s Show)

Jackie and Fez in Season 8 of "That 70s Show".

Over the eight seasons of That '70s Show, Jackie had long-term relationships with both Kelso and Hyde, the latter of which was known as a fan-favorite.

During the final season, many of the main cast members decided not to return, allowing for Jackie and Fez to be spotlighted as main characters. The two ended up in a relationship, something that didn't make sense to viewers who had watched Jackie's character grow and then seemingly regress.

Haley & Dylan (Modern Family)

He and Haley resume their relationship in the final season, and Haley learns she is pregnant with twins. They soon wed and had a relationship that somewhat mirrored Claire and Phil's. Fans were confused by Haley's desire to reunite with her high school beau, given that she had stronger chemistry with her ex-boyfriend Andy, played by Adam Devine.

Ted & Robin (How I Met Your Mother)

How I Met Your Mother's Ted and Robin had an on-and-off-again relationship that was seemingly put to rest when she got engaged to Ted's best friend Barney. However, the final season continued to drop hints at a reunion between the two, and the finale revealed that Robin and Barney actually got divorced.

Ted ended up married to the mother of his children, but in the final minutes of the show, flashbacks showed her dying of a mysterious illness. This opened the door once again for middle-aged Ted and Robin, using callbacks from the pilot to end the series. It felt like a cop-out and minimized the impact Ted and his wife's relationship had on him and the story he was telling.
