The Office was full of characters who acted in ways that no one should ever act like while at work. These caricatures of bad office behavior were highly effective at making people laugh. But, the real brilliance of the show is that audiences grew to care about many of these characters despite how over the top they could be.

While there were many heartwarming moments from the show, there were also some that were pretty horrible. Some of the employees from Dunder Mifflin made some bad choices at times. We’ve collected a list of the worst thing each main character from The Office ever did on the show.

10. MEREDITH: BEING A HORRIBLE PARENT

Meredith from the Office

Meredith Palmer’s main issue on the show was her personal struggles with alcohol. This was used as a sort of punch-line throughout the series. She was also rather apathetic about being accepted by her peers and ended up paying no mind to her appearance.

This caused her to show up to work in rather unprofessional outfits more than once. The worst thing about her, however, was how she clearly wasn’t a very involved parent. She was more concerned with herself than with her kids, and her lack of investment becomes very clear when we learn more about her son and his behaviour.

9. CREED: PROBABLY ENDING SOMEONE'S LIFE

Creed is often a background character in the show, and he’s one of the strangest of them all. There are multiple subtle nods throughout the series to Creed being a criminal. He comes up to work on Halloween covered in blood, but everyone assumes it’s fake because of the holiday.

While it’s never completely confirmed, it seems pretty clear that Creed has most likely ended someone's life at some point (as well as committed a lot of other crimes.)

8. PHYLLIS: SHAMING PAM

Angela, Pam, and Phyllis party planning on The Office

Phyllis is one of the employees of Dunder Mifflin who tends to get more picked on more often than not. She has to deal with Michael being rude to her and after a while, it becomes far more sad than amusing. And, on top of that, Angela often bullies her, especially when it came to the Party Planning Committee.

However, that does not mean that Phyllis has never been one the other end of the bullying stick herself. One issue with Phyllis is the ways that she would occasionally speak to Pam. One time she even told her she had to be fair about giving out calls, not just pick a salesman based on who she was intimately involved with. Which is not only insulting on a personal level, but also on a professional level.

7. ANGELA: HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH DWIGHT

Dwight and Angela dancing at their wedding in The Office

Angela might be one of the worst people on The Office. She is extremely judgemental and often just mean. She shames people, is prejudiced towards Oscar, and bullies Phyllis. However, the worst thing she did that’s just one instance is when she cheated on Andy with Dwight.

She clearly didn’t want to be with Andy and did not treat him well, whatsoever. She also was just using Dwight during this time as she made it clear that she had no intention or pursuing something serious with him.

6. OSCAR: HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH THE SENATOR

The Office Oscar and Robert

Angela isn’t the only one who made some big mistakes by having an affair. Oscar also did the same thing. He was sleeping with Angela’s husband, Senator Lipton, while they were married.

While Angela never treated him well, Oscar having an affair with her husband while they were coworkers was definitely both unprofessional and mean on a personal level. However, the real villain in all of this turned out to be the Senator and eventually Oscar and Angela became friends.

5. DWIGHT: HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH ANGELA/KILLING HER CAT

Dwight angrily talking to the camera in The Office.

Dwight is probably one of the most problematic characters on the show. He was always quite cruel to many people around him and often acted without regard for the consequences of those actions. It is also important to note that he held many rather prejudiced opinions that he openly shared without hesitation.

However, one of the worst things he did was have an affair with Angela while she was dating Andy. Oh, and let's not forget about the time Dwight kills Angela’s beloved cat, Sprinkles, and then lied to her about it.

4. PAM: KEEPING HERSELF FROM SUCCESS

Making mistakes isn’t always about hurting other people directly. Sometimes the mistakes we make end up affecting ourselves more than anyone else. Pam’s biggest flaw was how she treated herself and the way she held herself back. Her lack of self-confidence led to many issues in her life and how she ended up almost losing Jim.

She also never really committed to her art or even finished art school. Even though she did progress as the series went on, she often just stood in her own way.

3. ANDY: SAILING THE WORLD BUT PRETENDING TO STILL BE IN THE OFFICE

Ed Helms as Andy Bernard on The Office

Andy Bernard started out as a clueless but very annoying employee from Stamford and eventually devolved into being one of the worst characters on the show. The worst thing he did, however, is when he skipped out of his job as the manager (as well as his relationship with Erin) to sail around the world with his brother.

Not only had he treated Erin horribly during this time, but he also lied after returning to the office and tried to make David Wallace think he had been in Scranton all along.

2. JIM: LYING TO PAM ABOUT EVERYTHING WITH ATHLEAD

While Jim and Pam seem to have had a truly perfect relationship (once they finally get together) the final season of The Office reveals that that’s simply not the case. Though they did have some communication issues (which is something that most couples have to deal with at one point in their relationship,) Jim consistently kept things from Pam- things that would have affected her just as much as they would have affected him.

He lied and tried to manage things on his own. And that is just not how a good marriage works. Your partner is on the same side as you and needs to know about what is happening in your life as it affects both of you. Not including her in these plans (and straight up lying to her at times) is just unfair and kind of gross.

1. MICHAEL: SCOTT’S TOTS

Michael and Toby on The Office

Michael Scott is not only one of the most problematic sitcom characters in the modern era but also the kind of person that everyone prays that they will never meet. Especially in a professional setting. He’s way too involved in his employee’s lives, makes shockingly inappropriate jokes, and has little respect for those around him. But, one of the worst things he ever did was promising a class of students that he would pay for their college educations- if they finished high school successfully.

The fact that he kept this ruse up while knowing he wouldn’t be able to do it, is extremely wrong. He let these students believe they had college paid for up until they were about to graduate, which likely left them scrambling to figure out what to do in order to cover the costs of their post-secondary educations.
