Thanks to Piepacker, classic games such as Worms and Earthworm Jim are free to play. This new multiplayer social gaming platform launched this week, featuring these classic titles and more for players to enjoy with friends online for free.

Piepacker is a brand new multiplayer social gaming platform that lets players play retro games online with friends for free. The platform was originally pitched on Kickstarter where it raised $220,656 in funds from 1190 backers, along with a further $3 million in seed funding. Piepacker has partnered with companies such as Team 17 and Codemasters to cultivate a library of over 60 retro games from over the years. Many of the titles in the library were at some point on the PS1, SNES, GBA, SEGA Mega Drive, and other retro consoles. The library isn’t just for old-school multiplayer titles, with some newer games that are in the retro style such as Xeno Crisis and Spacegulls being included.

Piepacker launched in open beta on June 8, with access across Europe, North America, and Australia currently. The multiplayer online platform is set to be optimized for more territories such as Latin American, Japan, Singapore, and the Middle East later this summer. According to the official Piepacker website, the gaming platform works directly in a Google Chrome browser with a built-in video chat that has augmented reality 3D masks for fun chat options. The large library of retro games includes classics such as Sensible Soccer, Glover, Earthworm Kim, and Worms World Party

Retro multiplayer games and augmented reality video chat aren’t all Piepacker has to offer, with more features being planned for the service down the road. Competitive modes and leader boards are in the works. Twitch integration is also being developed, along with support for legally acquired ROMs for use in private rooms. Piepacker will even allow support for physical retro gaming cartridges through the use of the PieReader, the official, one-time accessory only available to those who backed the Kickstarter in October.

Retro fans and gamers who never got to experience some of these retro titles now can do so legally, along with enjoying the multiplayer aspects enjoyed by many during their childhood and during weekend sleepovers. The magic of many of these games is still alive and well thanks to Piepacker. All that’s missing is many of the classic Nintendo titles, such as Mario Party and Mario Kart. The open beta is now open to the public.
