Star Wars writer Gary Whitta has released Lewdle, a Wordle-like game that uses naughty words instead of traditional five-letter answers. The vulgar clone works similar to the original Wordle game, utilizing daily puzzles and challenging players to figure out the five-letter answer in six guesses. Lewdle’s predecessor has amassed viral attention in recent weeks for its simplistic game design, being constrained to a single five-by-six square grid. Attention on social media has made Wordle one of the biggest games in the world, and yet the game’s creator, Josh Wardle, has no intention of adding ads to monetize it.

Strategy is essential to completing Wordle puzzles since each guess reveals the position of corresponding letters. In order to guess the correct word, players will have to do more than randomly type in five-letter words. The Wordle player base has devised strategies and spread advice for wanna-be word sleuths, warning players to take their time when making their six guesses. Since each guess reveals important information regarding letter positioning – green meaning the letter is in the correct position, yellow meaning the letter is in the wrong place, and grey meaning the letter doesn’t appear at all – picking the right guess words can help eliminate alternative five-letter words in favor of the correct one. On top of its game design, Wordle memes have increased the game's social media virality, such as one that showed the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the Wordle box.

Star Wars writer Gary Whitta revealed on Twitter that he designed Lewdle, a vulgar Wordle clone that uses naughty five-letter words. Whitta remarked in his post that naughty words are “never the right answer” in Wordle, and his new free-to-play “browser-based knockoff” is the solution. Lewdle only uses lewd words, meaning it’s not safe for work. It plays similarly to Wordle, though it won’t accept traditional five-letter words as answers – warning players of incorrect inputs with shaking red squares. Instead, players need to discover the daily lewd word using other naughty words to uncover which letters exist in the puzzle.

Gary Whitta’s previous work includes screenwriting for Rogue One, Star Wars Rebels, and The Walking Dead, as well as acting as Editor-in-Chief for PC Gamer. It seems now he’s moved on to game design, recreating the viral word game Wordle with a lewd counterpart. Lewdle shares Wordle’s simplistic design – a five-by-six grid and a keyboard overlayed on a black screen. Each day the lewd word changes and players have another six chances to decipher the five-letter answer. Strategies are extremely similar between the games as well, though Lewdle is arguably more challenging since the dictionary of crude five letter words is limited, making it more difficult to garner valuable letter positioning.

Considering the onslaught of Wordle copycats, Lewdle is one that stays true to the original while simultaneously adding a unique spin to the formula. The game is also free to play and currently avoids any additional purchases, subscriptions, or ads that monetize it, unlike other Wordle app copycats.
