A creative new Wordle clone called Waffle includes no typing, instead tasking players with swapping different letters to form a grid of words. Due to its simple ruleset and social element, the original web-based word game became an instant pop culture sensation when it launched last year. The beloved daily puzzle has spawned many successors, like a Wordle clone with movie clips called Moviedle, but Waffle may be the most effective spin-off yet.

Developed by Josh Wardle, the word puzzle game Wordle was launched in October 2021 and purchased by The New York Times in January 2022. The game tasks players with figuring out a five-letter word within six tries, with every incorrect guess revealing which letters do or do not belong in the solution. This simple premise achieved instant popularity, and countless Wordle clones have popped up to put their own spin on the concept. For example, Marvle and Lordle edit the pool of solutions to only include words associated with the Marvel or Lord of the Rings franchises. Some clones are more unique, with the word puzzle game Antiwordle tasking players with avoiding a word rather than finding one.

A new Wordle-style puzzle game, Waffle, puts a fascinating new twist on the word puzzle formula. Rather than just a single word, Waffle tasks players with solving six words arranged in a waffle-like grid. The words start out jumbled, but like Wordle the game indicates which letters are in the correct position or in the right word but wrong position. Letters can be swapped, slowly assembling each word and narrowing down which letters fit into other spots.  Combining aspects of the web-based word puzzle with traditional crossword puzzles, Waffle is perhaps the most creative and self-contained World clone yet.

Wordle is still a very popular daily puzzle for fans to solve, but games like Waffle are treating to replace the it. Some fans believe that Trivia Quest is the next Wordle, with the daily trivia challenge arriving on Netflix earlier this month. Inspired by the classic phone app Trivia Crack, the interactive streaming series gives players a brand-new brainteaser to solve every day. While the paid subscription needed to play Trivia Quest may hold it back, Waffle could possibly pose a true challenge to Wordle's dominance.

While clearly inspired by Wordle, important changes to the formula make Waffle stand apart as an entirely original experience. The game features no typing, with players instead swapping letters to assemble a grid of six different words at once. For fans of daily word puzzles, and specifically for crossword puzzle enthusiasts, Waffle might be the next big thing.
