Warning: This article contains spoilers for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law episode 3.She-Hulk: Attorney at Law episode 3 raises a very strange question about the Sorcerer Supreme. When the Ancient One died in Doctor Strange, most viewers assumed Stephen Strange would be her successor. Surprisingly, the MCU's Phase 4 has revealed Wong is now Sorcerer Supreme instead, and in truth he's probably a better choice. Not only does Wong arguably have more experience of the mystic arts, he's also a lot less reckless.

It's not entirely clear how someone becomes Sorcerer Supreme in the MCU, but it appears to be a time-consuming process that involves a number of trials. There's intense debate over the placement of Doctor Strange in the MCU timeline, but the third act is generally believed to be set around 2017. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law revealed Wong's duel with Abomination in Shang-Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings was one of his trials to take the Ancient One's place, meaning he only became Sorcerer Supreme in 2024. Surprisingly, that means the MCU was without a Sorcerer Supreme for seven years.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law also revealed Wong keeps a LinkedIn page, which he's actually updated to indicate he's now Sorcerer Supreme (he has Bruce Banner as a contact, perhaps suggesting many Avengers do the same). According to Wong's LinkedIn page, the Sorcerer Supreme is no longer based in Kamar-Taj, but has instead moved to New York. It's a rather odd detail, given Doctor Strange indicated the Sorcerer Supreme lived at Kamar-Taj in Nepal, while the three Sanctum Sanctorums across the globe were looked after by keepers. Wong has clearly decided to break with this tradition.

Why Has Wong Moved To New York As Sorcerer Supreme?

Wong LinkedIn Profile

To be fair, there's no real need for the Sorcerer Supreme to have a set base. Wong has access to a Sling Ring, which he can use to travel from the remote magical training grounds of Kamar-Taj to New York in an instant. Still, given the details of Wong's LinkedIn page, he has actively decided to list New York as his new base of operations. That he's done so indicates he's settled at the Sanctum Sanctorum, and this matches with comments from Doctor Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that Wong has taken on responsibility for maintaining some of the Sanctum Sanctorum's portals - a job that should really belong to the Sanctum's keeper.

From an out-of-universe perspective, Marvel may simply have decided to switch things up and make Wong more accessible to other heroes now he is Sorcerer Supreme. In-universe, though, the most likely explanation is simply that, with Wong being Sorcerer Supreme and thus responsible for his peers, he believes he needs to keep a close eye on Stephen Strange. Doctor Strange is, after all, so reckless he is willing to conduct spells that risk damaging the entire fabric of reality. If Wong is indeed trying to keep Strange in check, though, then Spider-Man: No Way Home strongly suggests he isn't doing a particularly good job. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law episode 3 really does make Wong's Phase 4 decisions seem rather odd.
