DC Comics' preview for Wonder Woman #760 gives a glimpse of an old enemy's return -- but this time, he's seeking Diana's help. The long-lived villain is also a lead character in the upcoming film Wonder Woman 1984 (a.k.a. WW84), and has antagonized Diana/Wonder Woman and her Justice League colleagues regularly over the decades.

Canadian-born Mariko Tamaki will take over writerly duties on Wonder Woman's regular series starting with issue #759. Tamaki's first story arc begins as the comics and film worlds synergistically build up to the Wonder Woman film sequel's premiere. As of this writing, WW84 is still slated for theatrical release this June, although the recent spate of COVID-19/coronavirus-related postponements and reschedulings may change that date. Comic books, which can be enjoyed (and created) in private with minimal social contact, are proceeding as scheduled, thus far.

Wonder Woman #760 will feature the re-emergence of Maxwell Lord, a master manipulator who has assumed many forms and amassed many, many enemies in the DC Universe. The solicitation info follows (for completists, there will be three variant covers for Wonder Woman #760, by David Marquez, Joshua Middleton, and Adam Hughes):

A very intriguing synopsis, geared to test Wonder Woman's mettle as an ostensible paragon of grace and compassion. Maxwell Lord's essential subtype is the con man, the devious rich guy enhanced by telepathic powers. Moreso than other villains, it seems highly plausible that Lord would approach a hero he's often antagonized, claiming some desperate need while taking advantage of their good nature.

The question of Wonder Woman's most "vicious" villain is, of course, the kind of thing for which nerds live. Some would argue Cheetah, or Ares, or the military-industrial complex, or the League Of Systemic Patriarchy. Maxwell Lord is not a bruiser nor a wizard, but he is a particularly frustrating elitist. Diana actually did kill him, once (he was later revived by the rules of the DC Multiverse). Tamaki's recent work on Supergirl and Harley Quinn is witty and entertaining, and we're enthused to read her interpretation of one of DC Comics' greatest personality clashes.

Wonder Woman #760 will arrive in June 2020.
