'Wonder Woman' Hires Oscar-Winning 'Warcraft' VFX Supervisor

Wonder Woman Sets Visual Effects Supervisor

Warner Bros.' shared DC Comics cinematic universe officially kicked off with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel in 2013, but the world will crack open next year with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. The feature will introduce multiple heroes - including Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman - before they receive their own standalone films. Plus, the DC heroes will unite in Snyder's two-part Justice League.

DC and Warner Bros.' second release of 2016 following Batman V Superman will be David Ayer's villain-driven feature Suicide Squad, then Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) a.k.a. Wonder Woman will star in her own film. So far, little is known about the Wonder Woman standalone movie, but now Warner Bros. has acquired a visual effects supervisor, which may offer some insight into what to expect from the film.

Variety (h/t to CBM) is reporting Bill Westenhofer will serve as VFX Supervisor on Wonder Woman. Westenhofer and his team at Rhythm and Hues Studios received Oscars for their work on The Golden Compass and Life of Pi. His other credits include The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and he is currently working on Legendary Pictures' Warcraft.

Wonder Woman is scheduled to begin filming this fall, with Patty Jenkins (Monster) set to direct. Last we heard about the script, Jason Fuchs (Pan) was penning the script for Warner Bros. and DC. As for the cast, only Gadot and Chris Pine (Star Trek, Horrible Bosses 2) have signed on for the roles of Diana/Wonder Woman and her love interest Steve Trevor.

As evidenced by his previous credits, Westenhofer seems to have a specific knack for using visual effects to bring photo-realistic animals or monsters to life. Comparatively, Joe Letteri of Weta Digital (The Lord of the Rings, Avatar, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) served as VFX Supervisor on Batman V Superman.

Since Westenhofer's talents seem to lend themselves specifically to animals/creatures, that may offer a hint as to what to expect from Wonder Woman. In the comics, Diana hails from Themyscira, a fictional island that is home to the Amazons and modeled after ancient Greek mythology. As such, the island is populated by many different mythological creatures like centaurs, Pegasi and griffons among others - which Westenhofer has some experience creating due to his work on the second Percy Jackson film.

Of course, with so little information about the plot of Wonder Woman, the characters involved, or where Diana Prince will travel to in the film, it's difficult to say how Westenhofer will lend his talents to this entry in the DCCU. However, since it will be Wonder Woman's solo outing, there certainly may be room to explore Themyscira and all its inhabitants.
