The superhero movie blockbusters Wonder Woman and Thor: Ragnarok are among the nominees for the 2017 Costume Designers Guild Awards. Wonder Woman and Thor: Ragnarok have been celebrated in many other ways apart from their global box office successes of $821 million and $850 million, respectively; they've also been lauded for their engaging characters and story lines, superior visual effects and creative direction.

There's no question, however, that the films wouldn't have been as well-received if not for the stunning costume work, which, like other key elements fans see on the big screen, help inform each and every actor's portrayal. Quite simply, Gal Gadot wouldn't wow as Wonder Woman and Chris Hemsworth wouldn't soar as Thor if they didn't look the part, which begins by their respective costume design teams dressing them both for success.

According to THR, the work of the costume teams definitely paid off Wednesday, when the Costume Designers Guild named its nominees in film and television for 2017. Unlike fellow industry organizations like the Screen Actors Guild, the Costume Designers Guild breaks their nominations down into three categories: Excellence in Contemporary Film, Excellence in Period Film and Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film. Wonder Woman's costume designer, Lindy Hemming, and Thor: Ragnarok's Mayes C. Rubeo were among the five nominees in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy category, which also included Beauty and the Beast (Jacqueline Durran), Blade Runner 2049 (Renée April) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Michael Kaplan).

In the Contemporary Film Category, Get Out (Nadine Haders) and I, Tonya (Jennifer Johnson) each scored nods, along with Lady Bird (April Napier) and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (Melissa Toth). A surprise entry in the category came with the nomination of Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Arianne Phillips) not because of the quality of the film's costumes, but more due to the fact that it was placed in the Contemporary Film genre, since fans could easily argue its fantastical elements make it more of a sci-fi/fantasy film.

Lastly, in the Period Film category, the Costume Designers Guild nominated Dunkirk (Jeffry Kurland), Murder on the Orient Express (Alexandra Byrne), Phantom Thread (Mark Bridges), The Greatest Showman (Ellen Mirojnick) and The Shape of Water (Luis Sequeira).

While each of the films' respective nominations can toast their recognition by the Costume Designers Guild, the competition is about to get fierce quick. That's because the Oscars don't parse out categories in their nominations, meaning that only five of the 15 films recognized by the Costume Designers Guild Wednesday will go on the score Academy Award nominations when they are announced January 22.

If anything, the designers can each breathe a sigh of relief with their nominations, since they've effectively made a short list of films that will likely merit the most consideration as Academy members cast their nomination ballots this week. Unlike the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Movie Awards and critic organizations, the Costume Designers Guild Awards are voted on by film industry personnel — and many of which may already belong to the Academy's 6,000-person voting membership.
