Mild spoilers ahead for Infinite Frontier #0

The Amazons of Themyscira in DC’s new Infinite Frontier may not trust Yara Flor, the current Wonder Girl who may one day become Wonder Woman. Big changes are ahead for the island nation of warrior women. Now that Diana has ascended to another cosmic level, her sister Nubia has assumed her role as leader of Themyscira while her mother Hippolyta heads out into the world of men to fulfill her Diana’s duties with the Justice League.

Yara Flor is one of the most prominent and popular characters to emerge from DC’s recent Future State event. In stories taking place in a potential future, Yara has taken on the mantle of Wonder Woman. Not much has been revealed about her origins, but we do know that she is a member of the Amazons of the Amazon, a tribe similar to the warriors of Themyscira based in Brazil. It is said that she is the daughter of an Amazon warrior and a Brazilian River God. She has many of the same powers as Diana, including flight, superhuman strength, and agility. She also carries bolas that act as her own version of the Lasso of Truth. And she rides on a Pegasus named Jerry the Winged Horse.

DC is launching its big Infinite Frontier era and Yara’s origins will be explored in a new ongoing Wonder Girl series. A few lines in the kickoff anthology issue Infinite Frontier #0 set up a possible conflict brewing between Yara and Themyscira. Yara is first mentioned by name in a Wonder Woman story written by Becky Cloonan and Michael W. Conrad, with art by Alitha Martinez and Mark Morales. Hippolyta crowns Nubia the new Queen of Themyscira and prepares to leave the island. Nubia asks her, “Shouldn’t we wait? There’s still so much we don’t know. Like the Amazon of Brazil? She—” She is cut off by Hippolyta, who says “I intend on finding out what business this Yara Flor is up to.

As part of the issue’s framing device, Diana is watching these events unfold along with the Spectre. She asks him what Hippolyta and Nubia are talking about. “What did they mean though? Yara? Does this have something to do with the other tribe?” Spectre replies, “Come now, Diana…You will come to know what it is your mother senses.” The issue immediately launches into a short story focused on Yara, written and drawn by her creator, Joëlle Jones. It takes place long before she ever becomes Wonder Woman and sets up her upcoming series, which will see her travel from Iowa to Brazil and gain her powers. In the little bit shown here, she is at the Boise Air Terminal saying goodbye to her uncle and her aunt, who doesn’t want her to leave. As she waves farewell, two women are watching her from the shadows. “That’s her,” one says, while the other speaks into a communicator: “We have located the target.”

Clearly big things are in store for Yara Flor. The two women watching her are most likely members of the Amazons of the Amazon tribe. The Amazons of the Amazon split off from the Amazons of Themyscira thousands of years ago and established a society in the Rainforest. They have not featured much in the comics, but it appears that readers will get to learn a lot more about their society. With Hippolyta feeling the need to find out more about Yara, it’s possible that DC is setting up a future conflict between the two tribes. How will Wonder Girl fit into this conflict? Will she have to choose a side, or could she help bridge the divide and bring the Amazons together? The full impact of Yara Flor’s arrival in the DC Universe will be further explored in Infinite Frontier.
