Wonder Woman Set Photos: Diana Prince Goes Undercover In WWI

Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot begins filming in November 2015

With Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice on the horizon, anyone paying attention firmly knows that the game is about to change. History will be made as audiences finally get a chance to see DC's Trinity -- and ultimately the Justice League -- standing together for the first time ever on the silver screen in live action form. However, aside from bringing together DC's greatest heroes, Warner Bros. seems intent on establishing a deep, rich mythology for the DC Extended Universe. One of the most important upcoming films for accomplishing that goal seems to be the impending Wonder Woman film.

Information regarding the female Justice League member's solo outing has slowly trickled in as time over time. Slowly but surely things seem to be taking shape for the groundbreaking superhero film. The latest pictures from the production seem to point towards the goals of Diana Prince (Gal Gadot), and a specific MacGuffin.

New set photos have leaked from the production of Wonder Woman that showcase the iconic DC heroine on an adventure in a bygone era. Check them out below.

The photos show Wonder Woman seemingly undercover during WWI, accompanied by her companion and love interest Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). Despite the apparent attempt to keep a low profile, she walks out onto the street wielding a sword in one hand, and a shield in another -- she's not known for subtlety anyway. These props are not exactly surprising, when one considers that she has already showcased her ability to use such items in the Batman V Superman trailer.

This new information seems to corroborate earlier rumors, suggesting the Wonder Woman storyline will revolve around powerful DC villain Ares teaming up with sorceress Circe to obtain a powerful sword possessed by the Amazonian women. Having Ares as the mastermind behind the villainous plot makes sense; he has a long history with Wonder Woman, and he gains his power from the death and destruction caused by conflict, making a wartime setting a perfect time to introduce him.

Whether or not she ends up finding the sword by the time Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) unleashes Doomsday remains a mystery. The sword and shield combination she wields in the trailer for Batman V Superman does not appear to be the same ones Diana is holding in these pictures. This could seemingly indicate that her search will continue beyond BVS, and the artifact will become a long-term MacGuffin -- like the Infinity Stones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Of course it's possible that differences in production design -- as well as in-universe time -- are to blame for the altered look of the sword, and her search comes to an end by the time she teams up with Batman and Superman.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will be in theaters on March 25th, 2016; Suicide Squad on August 5th, 2016; Wonder Woman – June 23rd, 2017; Justice League – November 17th, 2017; The Flash – March 23rd, 2018; Aquaman – July 27th, 2018; Shazam – April 5th, 2019; Justice League 2 – June 14th, 2019; Cyborg – April 3rd, 2020; Green Lantern – June 19th, 2020.
