DC Comics has unveiled the next hero to assume the role of Wonder Woman will be a familiar face that has a notable history with Diana Prince: Nubia. As part of DC's upcoming Future State event, Nubia, who is Prince's twin sister, will wield the Lasso of Truth and become Wonder Woman.

Nubia first appeared as Diana's long-lost twin sister in Wonder Woman #204. She became one of the first black superheroes in DC Comics upon debuting in 1973 and has made a handful of appearances since. Nubia will be starring in her own DC young adult graphic novel series called Nubia, from L.L. McKinney (A Blade So Black) and Robyn Smith. And now, McKinney and artist Alitha Martinez (REPRESENT! McKinney and Martinez are teaming up an upcoming story that will appear in the upcoming Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman. Their story will be titled Nubia, and will feature the hero as Wonder Woman. Meanwhile, Nubia will also appear in the Immortal Wonder Woman story arc from Becky Cloonan, Michael W. Conrad, and Jen Bartel. McKinney tweeted that she was excited to bring Nubia to the mainstage as part of the Future State event, while tweeting out a picture of the Amazonian as Wonder Woman.

It's exciting to see Nubia get more of a showcase in the comics. With her own YA graphic novel and self-titled story in the Future State event, DC is finally giving the character a bigger platform that she deserves. It will be interesting to see how Nubia's time as Wonder Woman lines up with another brand-new Wonder Woman, Yara Flor. The new Brazillian hero will debut in the upcoming Future State: Justice League. How Nubia, Yara, and Diana's timeline matches up will be interesting. Regardless, it's exciting to see Nubia become the new Wonder Woman - even if it's just for a single story.

The announcement that Nubia will be the new Wonder Woman is the latest of a series of exciting announcements regarding the Future State line. DC Comics has smartly brought in a great group of talented creators with diverse backgrounds to make brand-new takes on both old and new characters. It's refreshing to see that Nubia wasn't sidelined in this event and will take center-stage in her own story. The two-month, line-wide event starts in January.
