On Thursday, DC Comics announced a brand new event that will take the DC Universe into a brand new future following the events of the Dark Nights: Death Metal. Future State will see a handful of new characters be introduced in place of legacy heroes, including a brand-new Wonder Woman.

The Future State series will be a two-month, line-wide event that will change the status quo for DC Comics. Monthy (and twice monthly) oversized anthologies and one-shots will feature new characters and brand new arcs in the future DC Universe. The new Wonder Woman will be featured in the oversized comic in Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman by Becky Cloonan, Michael W. Conrad, and Jen Bartel, as well as Future State: Superman/Wonder Woman by Dan Watters and Leila del Duca, and Future State: Wonder Woman by Joelle Jones.

The details surrounding the new Wonder Woman are scarce, but DC Comics revealed Amazonian Yara Flor will assume the role next. She will also join forces with the new Superman, Jon Kent, in an effort to protect their homes. Flor is a brand new character who hasn't yet appeared in the pages of DC Comics. The Brazillian hero (born in the Amazon) has gold armor, with red outlines underneath. She's also got a Lasso of Truth that has balls at the end of it. All-in-all, Flor looks badass. She will also take part in the upcoming new Justice League story from Joshua Williamson and Robson Rocha.

Future Justice League

Like most details surrounding the new characters, it's unclear how Yara Flor became the new version of the popular hero, but in DC's Future State universe, she'll get the chance to prove she's the real deal as the new Wonder Woman. There's been no word on what happened to Diana, but considering the original Batman was killed, that doesn't spell the best news for the original Wonder Woman.

Joelle Jones is an excellent choice to write and draw the new solo miniseries. She's done excellent work for DC Comics in both the pages of Batman and Catwoman. Meanwhile, Becky Cloonan, Michael W. Conrad, and Jen Bartel are great choices for the creative team for Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman. Does that mean Yara Flor is immortal or that the original Wonder Woman is? Will the creative team come up with something as dark as Marvel's Immortal Hulk? There are so many different ways this character (and Diana's story) can be spun in DC's new future state.
