Warning: spoilers ahead for Wonder Woman #774!

Wonder Woman has had a rich history of costume designs dating back to her first comic story, yet her latest outfit pays true homage to her roots in Greek Mythology. As Wonder Woman awakes in Olympus, she's sporting a brand-new costume following the rich stylized traditions of ancient Greece and the Olympian Gods - one that's suggested to be her uniform as an ascended god.

In Wonder Woman #774's "Afterworlds, Part 5" from Michael W. Conrad, Becky Cloonan, Andy MacDonald, and Nick Filardi, Wonder Woman has arrived on Olympus as part of her journey through various mythological afterlives. Upon arriving, she discovers that Olympus is deserted and appears to have been the site of a bloody battle. Eventually, she discovers the sole survivor, a fragment of the God Janus. After investigating some more and hearing Janus out, Wonder Woman enlists the help of Deadman to travel to the underworld and investigate what happened to her godly ancestors.

As happened when she awoke in the Valhalla of Norse mythology, Wonder Woman's journey to Olympus comes with a costume change. While her iconic red, white, and blue color scheme remains - and so do a version of her tiara and bullet-deflecting bracelets - the new costume pays homage to artistic depictions of the Greek Pantheon and period-appropriate attire for ancient Greece. The issue reveals that after dying in DC's Dark Nights: Death Metal #7, Wonder Woman was supposed to ascend to godhood on Olympus, but the villainous half of Janus took her place. This revelation is big news on its own, but it also seems to indicate that Diana's costume in this issue is the one she'd have worn in her new role as an ascended god.

While the costume is brand new, much of it is very familiar. Rather than silver indestructible bracelets, Wonder Woman now sports golden armor braces on her wrists. Her gold tiara has been replaced with a hoplite-style half-helmet, further adding to her appearance as a warrior goddess. Her iconic boots have been replaced with traditional sandals and armor-plated shin-guards, much like the warriors of ancient Greece. Finally, her dress has been replaced with a traditional Greek tunic draped over an armored plate and a battle skirt; a traditional element of ancient Greek portrayal of the Gods and Goddesses (particularly Athena, Wonder Woman’s godly ally.) This new costume truly has all the bells and whistles befitting of a Diana who was meant to ascend to Olympian godhood after her death as a demigoddess.

Pursuing Janus into the Graveyard of the Gods, Wonder Woman has little time to settle into her new look, which signifies a destiny that now seems tragically out of reach. But having picked up forgotten abilities and new weapons on her journey so far, it seems that Wonder Woman's afterlife quest is intended to explore different expressions of who Diana is, likely before bringing them together when she eventually returns to life. If that's the case, it's good to know that Wonder Woman's ties to godhood will be represented, even if Janus has robbed her of the chance to ascend to her intended role on Olympus.
