Rumor Patrol: 'Wonder Woman' Movie Set in the 1920s

Wonder Woman set in 1920s

This time last year a lot of people were wondering if the Hollywood comic book movie craze was ever going to produce a female superhero movie, and now we've seen two announced in fairly quick succession. Marvel Studios is bringing Captain Marvel to the big screen in 2018, and Warner Bros. is finally making a Wonder Woman movie that's set to release in 2017, following the introduction of the character (played by Gal Gadot) in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

It's still very early days for Wonder Woman and a lot could still change between now and when the movie begins filming (which will presumably be in 2016), but Warner Bros. is reportedly already seeking a female director to helm the first ever live-action feature film about Paradise Island's most famous daughter.

Put aside any assumptions that Wonder Woman will be a sequel to Batman V Superman, however, as a new rumor suggests that a present day setting shouldn't be taking for granted. Bleeding Cool reports, based on sources that have seen the greenlit treatment for the film, that Wonder Woman will be a period piece set in the 1920s, in which the Amazonian warrior princess leaves her home on Paradise Island and finds herself in a world where women have only just got the vote.

The report offers a few more plot details, claiming that the first half of the film will be set on Paradise Island, where the warring Amazonian factions are fighting for dominance. Into this furore comes a man (who won't necessarily be Wonder Woman's regular love interest Steve Trevor) who asks the Amazons for help. Wonder Woman then travels with him to visit the world outside her home island: a world that isn't quite ready for someone like her.

Apparently this would be followed by a sequel set during World War II and the modern day, and a third movie set in the modern time period of Dawn of Justice. But since there's been no mention of Wonder Woman 2 in the current schedule of DC movies - which goes all the way up to 2020 - that part of the report is probably best left alone for now.

If true, this would mean that Wonder Woman is either immortal or ages very, very slowly in the DC cinematic universe. Either way, it would mean that she'll be quite a bit older and more experienced than either Batman or Superman in their shared movie universe. The idea of a powerful female character like Wonder Woman exploring a world going through the early days of women's liberation could definitely be compelling in the right hands, so let's hope that this proposed plot is more than just rumor.

Wonder Woman will be in theaters June 23, 2017.
