Swords are popular weapons, and while Wonder Woman frequently uses one, she also has a tendency to stick to her signature Lasso of Truth in DC Comics. DC Comics' 2019 New Year's special, New Year's Evil #1, may reveal a seasonal preference for one over the other. The Goddess of Truth is an excellent swordswoman, but she knows there are optimal - and suboptimal - times to wield one.

New Year's Evil is a one-shot anthology issue that tells original short comic stories about many of DC's iconic villains. From the Joker to Sinestro, the villainous cast of characters is gathered for some festive stories about Christmas, friendship, and resolutions. This includes Wonder Woman's foe, Ares - the God of War.

The story "Winter's Root" focuses on Ares and features Wonder Woman. It has the creative team of Dan Watters, Alessandro Vitti, Adriano Lucas, and Gabriela Downie. In the story, the war deity challenges Wonder Woman to a battle, goading her into attacking him and trying to convince her to wield a sword. She refuses for a long time, giving him a rather surprising reason: winter isn't a great time for swords. This may come as a shock to Game of Thrones fans.

Wonder Woman states that she hates "how a sword hilt tends to freeze to one's hand in the cold." At first, this just seems like random banter, but Wonder Woman might have a point - one that may also apply to cryokinetic villains. Since most swords have metal hilts, there is a chance that they could stick to the wielder's hand. Additionally, having a sword frozen in hand would definitely limit the ability to effectively use it. However, a lasso - being a rope without metal in it - wouldn't have the same problem.

Even if it is just an uncomfortable feeling and not a hindrance, there's no question that a lasso would be the more comfortable option here. It has a longer reach and allows for more free-flowing attack motions than a sword would. While Wonder Woman will shift things up on occasion and fight with a sword and shield, this preference could explain why she has a tendency to lean towards her lasso - in addition to the many additional abilities it grants her. It allows her to eliminate lies from her foes' mouths in many instances, while also working on herself should she need to see through illusions. It also lets her bind her enemies and limit their mobility significantly - none of which a sword can do. The cold of wintertime may not be the number one reason for not wielding a sword, but it definitely isn't a bad excuse for DC heroes to change up the arsenal every now and again. Wonder Woman is skilled with both of her weapons, so she shouldn't have a problem switching between the two, seasonally as needed.
