Warning: contains major spoilers for Are You Afraid of Darkseid? #1!

Of all the powers Wonder Woman has, her ability to talk to animals is the one that is forgotten most often by fans. She doesn't use it as frequently as her other powers, but in Are You Afraid of Darkseid? #1, she does use it. However, in this situation, it definitely seems like the kind of ability that should be in Vixen's power set.

Wonder Woman has super strength, flight, super speed, advanced healing, and, yes, even the capacity to talk to animals. This ability was recently seen in her ongoing series, as her friend, Siegfried, is also capable of it. However, while Wonder Woman's fellow hero Vixen is able to take on the abilities of animals, she can't communicate with them in the same way - which seems like a major oversight.

The story "Black-Eyed-Kids" comes from the creative team of Terry Blas, Garry Brown, Marissa Louise, Dave Sharp, and Michael McCalister. In it, Wonder Woman and Vixen team up to investigate strange occurrences in Zambesi's M'Changa Province. Bizarre children have been appearing and both heroines are there to find out why. They eventually discover the children are actually animals - which they wouldn't have known without Wonder Woman's ability to communicate with them.

Considering Vixen's Tantu Totem possession allows her to channel animals' abilities, it would seem natural for her to also be able to communicate with them. After all, being in their mindset and knowing their thoughts could help her unlock the best uses and tactics for her abilities. Unfortunately, that is one of the limitations of her imitations. She can replicate the abilities of animals from the past or present and even manipulate morphogenetic fields. However, she cannot speak with or understand the creatures she mirrors.

For Wonder Woman, speaking to animals isn't a power that she uses very often. As she mentions in this issue, she can speak to the Kangas in Themyscira - which are aliens, as Vixen points out. Wonder Woman's communicative abilities definitely have the potential to extend past Earth's borders to extraterrestrial fauna. Vixen's powers also might, though they have not been explored as thoroughly in space or on other planets. Once, she was able to access metahuman abilities, including Superman's, but it was the result of her connection to the morphogenetic field being limited from its norm.

Vixen and Wonder Woman are a great team and seeing them work together twice over the past year has been interesting. They complement each other well. However, it would still make more sense for Wonder Woman's most forgotten power to be one that Vixen had instead - or one she could gain in the future. It would expand her capabilities during missions like these and increase her connection to Earth's morphogenetic field. These DC heroes are a dynamic duo, but Wonder Woman and Vixen could use a little power shift.
