The story of how DC’s two Wonder Women, Diana and Nubia, first met will be retold in a middle-grade readers graphic novel. Titled Diana and Nubia: Princesses of the Amazons, the book was announced during ComicsPRO 2022, a digital retailer’s conference. It is a follow-up to Diana: Princess of the Amazons and will be written by Shannon and Dean Hale and illustrated by Victoria Ying. The book goes on sale November 8.

Nubia has a long history in the Wonder Woman mythos; she first appeared in 1973’s Wonder Woman #204, created by Robert Kaniger and Don Heck. Introduced as Wonder Woman’s long-lost twin sister, Nubia was created from clay by Hippolyta, much like Diana; however, she was whisked away by Mars, and raised away from her mother. After the character’s initial appearances, she would not return to publication for more than 20 years, returning in 1999’s Wonder Woman Annual #8. The character has continued to make sporadic appearances over the years, mostly as an ally to Wonder Woman. Recently, Hippolyta ventured into Man’s World to take her daughter’s place in the Justice League, leaving Nubia in charge of Themyscira. Diana returned to our reality and gave Nubia her blessing to be both Wonder Woman and Queen of the Amazons. Nubia has received more attention in the past year than her whole career, and now DC is retelling the story of how she and Diana met in a brand-new graphic novel for young readers.

More information on the book, including the cover, was shared on DC’s website. Nubia is Princess of the Amazons, loving her life on Themyscira. While Nubia’s life is good, and she enjoys the company of her “aunties,” she yearns for other children to play with. Nubia’s wish comes true, when one morning she finds herself sharing a room with a stranger named Diana, who insists the room is hers as well. Matters get even weirder when Nubia’s parents tell her Diana has always been here, and that she and Nubia have always shared a bedroom. The press release goes on to say the book would be an exploration of “the trials and joys of siblings.

Over the past year, Nubia has not only been Queen of Themyscira, but Wonder Woman as well, elevating her profile in the eyes of readers; Nubia’s ascension is also a win for representation. Over the years, various creators have tweaked Nubia’s origin---in some incarnations she is not Wonder Woman’s sister. However, the creative team behind Diana and Nubia have wisely pivoted back to Nubia’s classic origin, and in the process gives middle-grade readers a fun story of sibling rivalry.

Both Diana and Nubia are Wonder Women, inspiring hope worldwide and now a new middle-grade reader graphic novel retells the story of their first meeting.
