Wonder Woman is stuck trying to figure out what exactly happened to the world she used to know as she navigates through a post-apocalyptic hellscape in Wonder Woman: Dead Earth. In previews for the series' second issue, Diana's trip back to Themiscyra doesn't go as planned.

In Wonder Woman: Dead Earth #1, Wonder Woman awakened in a world ravaged by destruction. Her friends, family and fellow heroes were all seemingly killed in what's been described as a big war followed by "The Great Fire" where (it's believed) atom bombs were dropped, causing nuclear destruction and chaos.

In previews for Wonder Woman: Dead Earth #2, Diana's journey doesn't get any easier. As she leads hundreds of people to supposed salvation, she soon discovers her plan might have failed. Wonder Woman seems to accomplish her goal of bringing people to the former paradise known as Themiscyra, but the island is not what it once was. Series creator Daniel Warren Johnson told DC Publisher and CCO Jim Lee he wanted to tell a Wonder Woman story where Diana was pushed to her limits.

I wanted to make [Wonder Woman] look a little different, but still keep that core element of who she is. See if I could make something where I was really pushing her to her limits. I was trying to come up with a world to make Diana think, ‘Is what I believe truly worth it, when everybody else feels so differently?’ That’s where the impetus of the story came from.

Mission accomplished.

Wonder Woman: Dead Earth's first issue was one of the best debut books from DC's Black Label line. It was fresh, yet devastating to see a character so driven by hope wake up in desolation and destruction. However, even in the face of extreme turmoil, Wonder Woman still carried that hopeful mindset and wants to help people. It's a really great take that shows why Diana is such an important, great hero.
