Wonder Woman Pushes DCEU Past $3 Billion at Worldwide Box Office

Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman pushes Warner Bros & DC Films' DC Extended Universe past the $3 billion mark at the worldwide box office.

Thanks to Wonder Woman's incredible box office haul, the DC Extended Universe has now earned over $3 billion worldwide. Last year, Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice not only officially launched the studio's new shared universe, but also catapulted the franchise beyond $1 billion. Later that year, David Ayer's Suicide Squad drove the series into the $2 billion territory, and now, Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman - featuring Gal Gadot as the eponymous superhero - has pushed the DCEU passed $3 billion worldwide, an impressive feat considering that it's only the fourth installment in the burgeoning universe.

It's no secret that the DCEU has suffered from negative public perception due to continual divisiveness among critics and audiences, ever since Snyder's Man of Steel hit theaters four years ago. After three mixed-to-negatively reviewed installments, the DCEU caught its first break with Wonder Woman earlier this summer, which became the first critically acclaimed DC Comics movie since Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. Positive reviews and word-of-mouth helped the movie reign supreme at the worldwide box office for several weeks, and it continues to impress.

After one month in theaters, Wonder Woman broke the $700 million barrier at the worldwide box office this past weekend, thereby becoming one of the top 100 highest-grossing movies ever released; the news came mere days after the film surpassed all three previous installments to become the largest DCEU release at the domestic box office. As of the time of this writing, Wonder Woman has currently grossed $713.9 million globally, thus pushing the DCEU's total box office cume to exactly $3 billion, according to Box Office Mojo.

Regardless of how well the movies were received by critics and general audiences, there's no denying that each installment has been financially successful, especially Wonder Woman, which had an estimated production budget of $149 million. Considering that the acclaimed superhero film still has some time before it leaves theaters, it's quite possible that it could surpass Ayer's Suicide Squad to become the second highest-grossing release globally for the DCEU, although it may not break $800 million worldwide.

Still, Wonder Woman's critical reception and box office success may have potentially increased hype for Snyder's Justice League, which sees the world's finest heroes - Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman, The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) - unite for the first time against the supervillain Steppenwolf. Whether that movie could push the DCEU past $4 billion is something that remains to be seen, though it stands a much better chance now than it did before Wonder Woman released.
