A new Wonder Woman comic miniseries due out this summer will offer a stylized monochromatic look for the Amazing Amazon, with a number of stunning variant covers by several legendary artists. Wonder Woman: Black and Gold will be one of many special series released by DC Comics in conjunction with the 80th anniversary of Wonder Woman's creation.

Wonder Woman was the brainchild of psychologist William Moulton Marston, who was approached by comics publisher Max Gaines after Marston published a well-received article decrying the lack of female heroes in a medium he felt had "great educational potential." Challenged to create a superheroine who might appeal to women and prove as popular as Superman, Marston drew upon his love of Ancient Greek mythology to fashion an Amazon for the new age, who would conquer the world with love rather than war. Though her origins have been revised over the years to remain current, the core idea of a strong woman who fights for peace has struck a chord with readers around the world for eight decades, pushing Wonder Woman to become one of the world's most prominent feminist icons.

Wonder Woman: Black and Gold will honor that legacy, offering a variety of stories set across the long and varied history of Diana of Themyscira. Stylistically, the series will take inspiration from earlier anthologies like Batman: Black and White and Harley Quinn: Black, White, and Red, but with the gold of Wonder Woman's costume and trademark Lasso of Truth being given visual prominence. As part of the announcement, DC Comics also released the first of four variant covers for the series, created by Jen Bartel, Ramona Fradon, Yanick Paquette and Joshua Middleton, which can be viewed below.

DC Comics has an equally impressive line-up of writers and interior artists lined up to work on Wonder Woman: Black and Gold. The first issue will feature a story regarding "the grace immortality grants a hero" that will reunite long-time collaborators John Arcudi (B.P.R.D.) and Ryan Sook (Legion of Super-Heroes). Writer/artist Becky Cloonan (who is also currently working on the monthly Wonder Woman title) will present a "spine-tingling tale" which reveals Diana's greatest weapon. Creator Amy Reeder (Amethyst) will offer up a retro story starring Wonder Woman's best friend, Etta Candy. Crazy is my Superpower writer AJ Mendez Brook and Constantine The Hellblazer artist Ming Doyle will join forces on a comedic story involving a tense family reunion on Themyscira. Finally, Nadia Shammas and Morgan Beem (Swamp Thing: Twin Branches) will reunite to spin a story regarding one of Diana's greatest failures coming back to haunt her.

Based on the covers and these descriptions, this first issue of Black and Gold will be a comic no Wonder Woman fan will want to miss. The miniseries is scheduled to run for six issues, with the first issue releasing in comic shops and on-line on June 22. This should have the final issue releasing sometime in December 2021, just in time for the actual 80th anniversary of Wonder Woman's first appearance in the December 1941 issue of All Star Comics.
