Warning: contains spoilers for Wonder Woman #782!

When it comes to weapons in DC Comics, Wonder Woman's lasso is iconic. However, Artemis, an Amazon who used to wear the mantle of Wonder Woman actually has a far more impressive arsenal. At times she has used a lasso, but her signature weapons give her more variety in combat scenarios.

Artemis debuted in 1994 within Wonder Woman #90. She is an Amazon aligned with the Bana-Mighdall faction. In the 1990s, she held the mantle of Wonder Woman, having won the mantle from Diana - thanks to orchestrations by Queen Hippolyta. Her death following those events led to Diana regaining her role as Wonder Woman and avenging Artemis. Artemis has since returned to main continuity in her role at Bana-Mighdall.

In Wonder Woman #782, the story "What Lies Beneath Part 2" concludes the issue. It has the creative team of Vita Ayala, Skylar Patridge, Romulo Fajardo, Jr., and Becca Carey. It is part of the "Road to the Trial of the Amazons", leading up to the major crossover event Trial of the Amazons in March 2022. The story includes the Amazons of Bana-Mighdall fighting a giant lion. Artemis successfully defeats it using her giant ax, Mistress. However, this is just one of many incredible weapons this Amazon has.

Wonder Woman has occasionally been known to wield a sword and shield, however, she predominantly fights with her Lasso of Truth, also known as the Golden Perfect. Artemis also has a lasso - the Lasso of Submission, which she was given by Diana. This lasso was renamed the Golden Promise. She also wields a pair of sai, a broadsword, and the Bow of Ra - in addition to her giant axe, Mistress. Many of these weapons are enchanted, such as the Bow of Ra which can shoot solar energy arrows. Artemis can summon Mistress and her sword can similarly be conjured at a moment's notice.

By comparison, Diana's arsenal is much weaker - being limited largely to just her lasso and the occasional sword, if she isn't using her superpowers. Artemis has a wide range of options she can choose between to best meet the challenges of whichever foe she has to take on. It also keeps her from being too similar to Diana and having Amazon combat be too similar between characters. While lassos and other rope-based weapons are the norm for the Wonder Family, a bit of variety definitely livens things up. Artemis is becoming more prominent alongside the rest of the Amazons, so it seems likely that she will be seeing far more action as tensions rise between the Amazon factions and Mount Olympus. If she brings her full arsenal with her, this former Wonder Woman will be a force to reckon with in upcoming DC Comics.
