Patty Jenkins reveals that Warner Bros. and she are considering a spinoff film based on Wonder Woman's Amazons. Jenkins and star Gal Gadot premiered the first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 over the weekend at CCXP in Brazil, ahead of which they took part in press conferences where the news of an Amazon spinoff came to light.

First introduced in Wonder Woman, the Amazons are an immortal group of women warriors who live on the secluded island, Themyscira. Diana herself is half-Amazon in addition being a demi-goddess. The Amazons appeared again briefly in Justice League, and it's believed they'll crop up again in Wonder Woman 1984. A behind the scenes photo from the sequel's filming hints at their return, referencing the splinter group, the Amazons of Bana-Mighdall. Introducing another group of Amazons would suggest there's an even richer history to them than we've already seen, and a spinoff centering on one or more of Diana's sisters might be a way of exploring it further.

During a press conference at Comic Con Experience in São Paulo, Brazil, Jenkins was asked about her plans for Wonder Woman 3 and she reiterated her earlier comments about already having a story in mind for a follow up to Wonder Woman 1984. She also revealed (via THR) that in addition to Wonder Woman 3, she and Warner Bros. are also considering a spinoff movie based on the Amazons. No further information was shared, but even just knowing there's talk of pursuing an Amazon spinoff suggests WB is interested in expanding this area of their DC film universe.

Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and the Amazons

Along with the DC Comics films Warner Bros. is planning to release, there have been discussions of other spinoff projects. One of these includes a "horror-tinged" spinoff movie based on monstrous Trench from Aquaman. This as well as an Amazon spinoff implies WB is at least interested in looking outside the box when it come to expanding their DC film universe. And even more than a Trench spinoff, an Amazon spinoff movie would allow them to introduce more of Wonder Woman's supporting characters and, if they choose, explore the backstory for fan-favorite characters like Robin Wright's Antiope.

Of course, were Warner Bros. to choose to actually make an Amazon spinoff, it would likely come after Wonder Woman 3. Jenkins clearly has an idea in mind for how she'll wrap up her trilogy, and it's possible that what she has in mind lends itself to being further explored in a spinoff. Perhaps it's the introduction of a group like the Amazons of Bana-Mighdall, who after first appearing in Wonder Woman 1984, will have a larger role to play in the third film? Only time will tell, but Wonder Woman fans can certainly be excited about the important place Diana and her sisters clearly seem to have in Warner Bros. future DC movie plans.
