After Wonder Woman 1984, DC needs to make a movie that focuses on Diana's (Gal Gadot) adventures in the present. So far, Wonder Woman's only solo movies have been set in different eras. 2017's Wonder Woman focused on the love story between Diana and Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) amid a search for Ares (David Thewlis) during World War I, and its sequel is, as the title suggests, set in 1984.

Wonder Woman's exploits in the 1980s will include battles with two classic DC Comics villains, Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) and Cheetah (Kristen Wiig). Cheetah is sure to pose a great challenge to Wonder Woman, as she's already been portrayed as one of the character's biggest villains. Plus, the movie will somehow reunite Diana with Steve Trevor, despite his heroic sacrifice in Wonder Woman. His return is believed by many to be linked to Maxwell Lord, but there's been no confirmation as to how his resurrection will occur.

If Wonder Woman 1984 becomes another hit for DC and Warner Bros, Wonder Woman 3 is sure to happen. But what will the setting be? Both solo movies have been set in different time periods, but Wonder Woman 3 should be the first modern movie starring the character. The movie could skip forward a few more decades and show what Diana is up to in the 2020s.

The 1980s were a period when female empowerment and representation were rising, and that's something that will be reflected in Wonder Woman 1984, but as things have changed and evolved since then, Wonder Woman 3 could amplify this aspect of the story through a modern setting that shows what a person like Diana could mean to the world in the 2020s.

Diana's life in the present has been touched on already, as she was a key character in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, but she hasn't received a full-length, modern-day story yet in the DCEU. Wonder Woman 3 can dive into her role in the modern world more deeply and go places that Batman v. Superman and Justice League didn't have time for. These ensemble films either developed the conflict between Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill) or focused on Steppenwolf's (Ciarán Hinds) threat with very little about Wonder Woman's exploits. A modern Wonder Woman 3 would serve as a character-focused sequel to the ensemble films that would depict how the world-threatening events affect Diana. Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins has acknowledged that her franchise has been focused on the past, and though a specific plan hasn't been nailed down for a third movie, fans can hope that Wonder Woman 3 that will move the franchise forward.
