WarnerMedia shares new footage of Wonder Woman 1984, the long-awaited sequel to Wonder Woman. The first film premiered in 2017 and was considered a massive success for Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment. Along with 2018's Black PantherWonder Woman helped revive the superhero genre as it was starting to go a little bit stale. Though Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot, made her debut in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the first Wonder Woman movie showed her origin story on the island of Themyscira. The original film took place during World War I, but the sequel is set in the 1980s.

Wonder Woman 1984 won't be released until June 2020, but fans already know a lot about it. Chris Pine's Steve Trevor will return, despite sacrificing himself in the first film. Comedian Kristen Wiig will make her DC debut, playing against type as the villain Cheetah. Though details about her character are still under wraps, one Twitter user shared some footage last year of Wiig on set. In it, she's seen in action as Cheetah, using wires to leap into the air. Wonder Woman 1984 also got a snazzy new poster over the summer, which gave fans a first look at Diana's new armor.

The new Wonder Woman 1984 footage comes from this week's presentation for WarnerMedia's new streaming service HBO Max. Though the footage isn't available online, according to IGN it shows Diana and Steve in Washington DC, at one point near the Washington Monument. That part of the footage indicates it may be a dream, because Diana says, "I can almost see it, like a beautiful dream.” However, a later scene shows Diana and Steve fighting people inside the White House, with Diana defending Steve and using her lasso. She's also wearing her new armor in that scene, offering a first look at it in battle.

Wonder Woman 1984 made news this time last week when director Patty Jenkins finally confirmed that Pedro Pascal will play Maxwell Lord, an influential businessman and villain from the comics. In a tweet, Jenkins captioned a photo of Lord, "Well hello...Max." The character's confirmed inclusion in the film has some speculating he plays a role in Steve's return. Many fans think Lord will use his powers to revive Steve in exchange for Diana's help. The first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 will reportedly drop in December, so viewers may get some insight into Lord's role in the film at that time.

Footage from Wonder Woman 1984 has so far been pretty scarce, so fans should be excited to hear details about these new scenes. DC in the 1980s is a big departure from the war-torn Europe shown in the first film, and the description of the new footage indicates that Jenkins and her team took advantage of the new setting. With this news, plus last week's Lord announcement, excitement is building for the film. Though Wonder Woman 1984 may still be awhile away, it's never too early to get excited about seeing Diana in action again.
