Wonder Woman 1984 adds Insecure's actor/writer Natasha Rothwell in a mystery role. Playing Kelli in the critically-acclaimed HBO series, Rothwell also portrayed Ms. Albrigt in the romantic teen comedy-drama film Love, Simon released in March. She served as a writer for SNL and was recently cast in Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog. Now she joins the superhero world with a part in the upcoming Patty Jenkins-directed comic book movie.

Production for Wonder Woman 1984 started earlier this month shortly after Geoff Johns teased the official title of the sequel. As exclusively reported by Screen Rant last year, Gal Gadot's second solo film as Diana Prince will take place in the 1980s at the height of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. Screen Rant's scoop also included Chris Pine's return, which was Jenkins confirmed herself by releasing the first image of the actor back on set. This is despite the fact that Pine's character, Steve Trevor, was killed off in the first Wonder Woman movie. Rothwell joins series newcomers like Kristen Wiig, who will play the primary antagonist, Barbara Minerva/Cheetah, and Narcos' Pedro Pascal in a yet to be revealed role.

Deadline is reporting that Rothwell is joining the upcoming Warner Bros. superhero sequel, but no word yet as to who she might be playing. This piece of casting news comes on the heels of Jenkins, Gadot and Pine's appearance at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend where they briefly talked about what to expect in Diana Prince's second solo adventure and debuted fans' first look at Wonder Woman 1984. The short clip wasn't released online, but Screen Rant has a detailed description of what's in the video.

While both Wiig and Rothwell worked on SNL, it appears like they didn't have the chance to work together. Wiig's regular stint lasted from 2005 to 2012. She came back to host the long-running comedy series twice: in 2013 and then once again in 2016. Rothwell, on the other hand, started writing for the show in 2015 and left in 2016. Regardless, it's interesting that Jenkins seems to be looking at former SNL talents for her upcoming superhero movie.

With filming for Wonder Woman 1984 set to continue in the next several months, fans can look forward to more details about the sequel, possibly including the reveal of Rothwell's role. Previously leaked set photos (besides officially released ones) tease fans about what the overall aesthetic of the movie will be, and it seems like Jenkins is embracing the funky and flamboyant '80s fashion sense that will help the film capture the decade's vibrant and lively vibe.
