Wonder Woman 1984 will maintain the continuity set for Diana by Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Gal Gadot debuted as the Amazonian princess in Zack Snyder's 2016 film where she first came into contact with Clark Kent/Superman (Henry Cavill) and Bruce Wayne/Batman (Henry Cavill). They team up against Doomsday in a battle that leads to the events of Justice League. As the DCEU evolves from its early blueprint, however, changes have been made regarding what the future holds for the franchise, but it will keep to the stick with what's already been established for Wonder Woman.

As first reported by Screen Rant, Wonder Woman 1984 will be set in the 1980s, with the sequel finding Diana at the height of the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Decades after her outing in Wonder Woman, she's faced with new foes like Kristen Wiig's Barbara Ann Minerva aka Cheetah and Pedro Pascal's Maxwell Lord. Meanwhile, joining Gadot from the original crew is director Patty Jenkins, back behind the camera and having helped pen the sequel's script, as well as Chris Pine, who will reprise his role as Steve Trevor.

While Wonder Woman 1984 is delayed a couple of months due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the marketing machine for the film continues with a brand new feature in Empire Magazine (via Luiz Fernando). On top of unveiling new images, the outlet also provides new story details, including the confirmation that the film will indeed maintain Diana's career as an art and antique curator. In the upcoming sequel, she's working at the Smithsonian and keeps a eye out for at any dangerous or mystical artifacts that could cause havoc.

Recently, Snyder revealed some new insight regarding the creative process of bringing Wonder Woman to life in Batman V Superman. He explained that the photo of Diana and Steve found by Bruce was supposedly from the Crimean War and not World War I. The filmmaker also added that Wonder Woman was the leader of the DC trinity of heroes because she's the most experienced among them, making her more knowledgeable in taking on their adversary. At that point in 2016, there's no way of knowing what Diana has been through, and this is why tracing her origins through Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 is pivotal in establishing her as the leader of the Justice League - whenever it is they re-assemble again on the big screen.

As Warner Bros.' DCEU veers away from Snyder's original plan for the franchise, there are details that they simply can't ignore - that includes Diana's established present day life in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. In any case, her work as an art and artifact curator works well with how Wonder Woman 1984 will incorporate Cheetah into the story as Barbara Ann Minerva starts out as an archaeologist before transforming into her villainous state. So while the universe will no longer adopt the remainder of Snyder's stories for the big screen, it would be difficult to fully remove all traces of him in the DCEU since he helped to set up the whole franchise.
