Chris Pine is opening up about his mysterious return in Wonder Woman 1984 and sharing how Steve Trevor is different this time around. Wonder Woman 1984 is one of this year's most anticipated movies following the critical and financial success that was 2017's Wonder Woman. The latest adventure for Diana (Gal Gadot) brings her into the 80s, a far cry from her first introduction to the outside world during World War I. This time around, she'll be facing off against Pedro Pascal's Maxwell Lord and Kristen Wiig's Barbara Minerva/Cheetah, though exactly what Wonder Woman 1984's conflict will entail is unknown at this time.

Luckily, Diana won't be alone in this because her long-lost love Steve has returned, somehow. When Diana last saw Steve, he was about to sacrifice himself in order to save countless lives. She could only watch in horror as his plane exploded, leaving little doubt about what happened to him. However, the first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 confirmed Steve is somehow alive and well in 1984, and he's prepared to help Diana with whatever she needs.

In a cover feature from EW, Pine offers some new insight about Steve's role in Wonder Woman 1984, though he doesn't give any clues about how Steve has returned. He does confirm, however, that this Steve is going to be a bit different than the one fans are familiar with. As Pine says:

In the first movie, I played the world-weary soldier who has seen all the depravity that humankind is capable of displaying. And in this one I get to be much more wide-eyed and joyful. My role is really just as a friend, lover, boyfriend-cum-bodyguard who’s trying his best to help Diana on her mission. I’m like the Watson to her Holmes.

The first trailer already hinted at some of that "wide-eyed" wonder Pine was describing, when Steve sees a trash can and mistakes it as art. Most of the details surrounding Wonder Woman 1984 are still unknown, but the action will take place in Washington DC, with one of the fight scenes even being set in the White House. Fans are eager for more details, especially since Wonder Woman 1984 was pushed back from 2019Wonder Woman 1984 will be the second female-fronted DCEU movie to be released this year, as Birds of Prey just hit theaters last weekend.

Fans were both thrilled and confused when news broke that Steve would be returning for Wonder Woman 1984, and hopefully the movie will provide a solid explanation for why he's alive. There are lots of theories swirling around, like one that suggests Maxwell Lord is behind Steve's resurrection. If that's the case, then Steve's return might be more sinister than initially assumed, but at least it seems like he and Diana will still get some sweet moments. Hopefully everything will be made clear when Wonder Woman 1984 hits theaters this June.
