The first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984, which debuted during the 2019 CCXP in Sao Paulo, Brazil, signals Diana's role in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is not being retconned. Wonder Woman has emerged as one of the DCEU's breakout characters, having made her big-screen debut in Batman v Superman, getting her own solo movie in Wonder Woman, and appearing again in Justice League. Although the second Wonder Woman solo film is seeing great anticipation, its 80's setting and certain plot elements have raised questions about the movie's place within the larger franchise.

The presence of Steve Trevor in the film, with Chris Pine reprising the role, has been one of the film's bigger question marks, along with how Pedro Pascal's portrayal of Maxwell Lord will fit into the story. However, raising even more questions is Diana saving lives and appearing in costume publicly in Wonder Woman 1984, which raises obvious continuity issues with her efforts to keep herself hidden from the world seen in Batman v Superman. However, the movie's first trailer also indicates just how the film is going to work around that.

The new trailer sees Diana in full Wonder Woman garb in action in a shopping mall, only to remove her tiara and use it to destroy the security cameras filming her. It's a quick shot, but it also says a lot about the movie's continuity with Batman v Superman. Specifically, that Diana is still making clear efforts to remain hidden from the world.

Moreover, the shot being in the first trailer indicates Warner Bros. was aware of the potential continuity conundrum, and are using the trailer to address that. Given just how quickly the shot itself comes and goes, it shows the studio also felt the need to alleviate that concern as efficiently as possible. By featuring the shot right at the beginning of the movie's marketing campaign, it's clear that the intent was to settle the matter right out of the gate.

Furthermore, it also indicates there being more nuance to Diana's speech about walking away from humanity at the end of Batman v Superman. With the death of Steve Trevor in 2017's Wonder Woman having affected her so deeply (to say nothing of the possible implications of Trevor's return), the point seems to be that Diana has shut herself from close relationships to avoid more heartbreak. However, Diana still hasn't turned her back on mankind altogether, which is further illustrated by her direct interactions with the modern world seen in Batman v Superman - she even had her armor and sword readily at hand to fight Doomsday, not exactly the actions of someone who had no intention of suiting up.

To be sure, Diana is still utilizing her superhuman abilities in public view in the trailer. However, she had also done exactly that in the first Wonder Woman while managing to fly under the radar in the ensuing decades. With the movie's 80's setting, Diana is also far removed from the issue of having footage of her heroic deeds being captured on a cell phone or easily distributed on the internet as well.

With Gal Gadot's portrayal of Diana Prince having connected so well with audiences, Wonder Woman 1984 seems set to become the DCEU's next billion-dollar movie (with last year's Aquaman standing as the biggest DC movie ever made.) Following the first trailer's debut, there are still a lot of unanswered questions to be explored with the specifics of the movie's story, especially with the involvement of Steve Trevor. However, one thing that is now clear is that Wonder Woman 1984 is making a conscious effort to stay in sync with where Diana was in Batman v Superman.
