Wonder Woman 1984, the second solo film within the DC Extended Universe, features the return of multiple characters previously seen in Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman. Despite the fact that sixty-six years have passed since the events of the first film, Wonder Woman 1984 is expected to bring back a few of the vital people from Diana Prince’s past, including some deceased characters.

Wonder Woman or Diana Prince, the Amazon warrior princess portrayed by Gal Gadot, returns in the sequel, exchanging the dreary setting of England during World War I for America in the 1980s. Wonder Woman 2 picks up decades after the events of Wonder Woman, as Diana grieves for Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), carries on as the protector of humanity after defeating Ares, and faces off against two new villains, Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) and Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal).

Since Wonder Woman 1984 is exploring a new decade, new characters are expected to be joining the DCEU, however, it has been confirmed that there will be a few characters brought back from the first film.

Hippolyta

Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta in Wonder Woman movie

Among the characters from the DC Extended Universe confirmed to appear in Wonder Woman 1984 is one of the leaders of Themyscira, Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen). Since Hippolyta, Diana’s mother and Queen of the Amazons, formerly told Diana that she would not be able to return once she left Themyscira, it is presumed that she will resurface in the form of a flashback featuring Diana’s former home

Antiope

Wonder Woman Movie Antiope Combat

Antiope (Robin Wright), Diana’s aunt and general of the Amazons, is also expected to make an appearance despite the character’s death during the battle against the German soldiers on the beach of Themyscira. Since both Hippolyta and Antiope have acted as Diana’s role models and advisors, their past wisdom may be revisited in flashbacks as Diana faces new trials in Wonder Woman 1984.

Steve Trevor

Chris Pine as Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman 1984

At the end of Wonder Woman, Steve Trevor sacrificed himself to destroy the plane that was meant to distribute Dr. Maru's deadly gas. Despite supposedly dying in the explosion that occurred over sixty years ago, the Wonder Woman 1984 official trailer shows the former Captain featured heavily in the film, appearing as if he hasn’t aged a day since his service in World War I with his memories of Diana still intact. When Steve Trevor first approaches Diana, he hands her his watch as he did at the end of Wonder Woman, showing he remembers their last moments together before he boarded the escaping German plane.

Since Steve appears to remember Diana, the next question isn’t so much how Steve Trevor survived, but whether or not the man in Wonder Woman 1984 is truly him. Since Greek gods, metahuman abilities, and advanced technology are all part of the fabric of the DC universe, the possibilities for Steve Trevor’s return are boundless. Many of the fan theories propose time travel, cloning, and even government super-soldier experiments as possible explanations for Steve Trevor’s return, but one of the more sinister theories for his appearance in the sequel is that it is not really him, and is instead a ploy created by Diana’s new nemeses, Cheetah or Maxwell Lord. From Cheetah’s interest in Diana’s love life to Lord’s proposition of granting wishes in the trailer, it seems more than likely that this isn’t the Steve Trevor we’ve come to know from Wonder Woman, but is rather an attempt to manipulate Diana by using her grief against her.

While Wonder Woman 1984 brings back many DCEU characters, the large time gap between the events of Wonder Woman and its sequel means fans will be forced to say goodbye to some of their favorite characters from the first film, such as Etta Candy (Lucy Davis) and the members of the Wonder Men. However, moving forward in the timeline also includes the possibility of cameos from characters previously introduced in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice or Justice League as they enter into Wonder Woman’s life.
