Wonder Woman 1984's release date is officially delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The spread of COVID-19 has had an unprecedented impact on the entertainment industry, as sports leagues have gone on hiatus, productions have been halted, and the release of several major upcoming movies have been delayed. As part of the global effort to help flatten the curve, movie theaters in multiple countries have been indefinitely closed. People are being advised to stay at home as often as possible, and it's going to be a while before things return to something resembling normalcy.

These circumstances have essentially wiped the next two months of Hollywood's release calendar clean. Major April and May movies have either been pushed back to another date or, as is the case with Trolls: World Tour, made available on-demand to watch during quarantine. Optimists hoping they'd be able to return to the multiplex in June to see a new film are bound to be disappointed, as coronavirus has now impacted that month as well.

Today, Variety confirmed Wonder Woman 1984 has been pushed back because of coronavirus concerns. It will now open on August 14, 2020, the date Warner Bros. had set aside for James Wan's Malignant. That horror film, along with WB's Scoob! and In the Heights, have been indefinitely delayed.

Wonder Woman 1984 Coronavirus

Last week, there were rumors Wonder Woman 1984 could go straight to on-demand, but WB quickly came out to reiterate their plans of giving the film a proper theatrical release. Per reports, director Patty Jenkins and producer Charles Roven pushed for the movie to be moved to August, so they got their wish. The big question now is if this new window is too optimistic or if it's actually attainable. AMC is the only major American theatrical chain to provide a timeline for their closure (6-12 weeks), but it's entirely possible it could run beyond that. The COVID-19 outbreak remains a very fluid situation, making it difficult to predict how things will look a couple of weeks from now, let alone a few months. Obviously, it will depend on the status of the global theatrical marketplace, as Wonder Woman 1984 was poised to be one of the year's biggest draws worldwide. WB won't release it until they're positive it can do robust business everywhere. Right now, they have their fingers crossed things will have improved by August.

As it stands right now, there remain a couple of big movies scheduled for June, including Pixar's Soul and action sequel Top Gun: Maverick, but they could get pushed back any day. In the case of Soul, it could be a situation similar to fellow animated film Minions: The Rise of Gru, where the studio is unable to complete the necessary work on the movie in time. The way things are going so far, films currently on tap for July may have to consider moving as well. The entire 2020 release calendar has been thrown into a state of flux due to coronavirus, and it'll be interesting to see how everything shake out once the dust settles.
