A new Wonder Woman 1984 image shows Diana (Gal Gadot) and Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) in a brand new location. The highly-anticipated DC sequel arrives in theaters this August after being pushed back from June because of the coronavirus pandemic. While some have expressed their doubt that the film will make its new release date (as in the case of star Connie Nielsen), so far Warner Bros. is operating as though it will. There were brief rumors that suggested Wonder Woman 1984 could instead be released on streaming, but both Warner Bros. and director Patty Jenkins have insisted it will get a theatrical run as was always intended.

Wonder Woman 1984 picks up decades after 2017's Wonder Woman, which introduced Diana to the world of man against the backdrop of World War I. The Diana of 1984 works at the Natural History Museum in Washington DC and has struck up a friendship with Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig), who fans know later becomes the villain Cheetah. Despite this seemingly domestic life, however, Diana still protects humanity from the shadows, and Wonder Woman 1984 will see her taking on a new threat in the form of businessman Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal). Most intriguing, however, is the return of Steve, as he seemingly died in the first film.

Steve has been a prominent part of Wonder Woman 1984's promotional materials, even stretching back as far as the film's first trailer. This new image, from Total Film magazine (via GamesRadar), puts Diana and Steve in some Middle Eastern location. Exactly how they get there from DC is unclear, but should be fun to discover. In the picture, it looks like Diana isn't getting good news. Luckily, she isn't alone. See it for yourself in the space below:

While talking to Total Film, Jenkins described Wonder Woman 1984 as a very different movie than the first installment. Per Jenkins, "This is its own standalone story that, of course, is also a continuation of our characters and their linear line. It’s just its own movie with its own very different feel." This will likely excite fans who are eager to see how Diana has changed since her time in World War I. While Diana has been seen in the present day in movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, those films didn't explore her character as thoroughly as her solo film did.

Pine previously revealed Steve's undergone a bit of a change too, describing him as being "much more wide-eyed and joyful." Steve and Diana's dynamic was one of the highlights of Wonder Woman, and getting to see them work side by side again is a thrilling prospect. The mystery surrounding Steve's return is also very intriguing, and many have wondered if Maxwell Lord has anything to do with it. For the time being, it remains something that fans will likely have to wait to discover. Hopefully, Wonder Woman 1984 will get to premiere in August as planned.
