It’s always important to remember the key points of a series before the release of the next major movie. Wonder Woman 1984 will continue the story of the DC Extended Universe, but the long gap between the titular character’s last to most recent appearances requires one to recap her story.

Since she’s connected to the DCEU at large, many points involve other characters and events. While major stories that were seen in films like Aquaman, Birds of Prey, and Shazam! are no doubt important, this list reflects the points that are more relevant to Wonder Woman or are too major in the grand scheme of things.

Wonder Woman's Role In The Great War

The way the world turned out during the present-day wouldn’t have been possible had it not been for Wonder Woman’s part in averting the first World War from being a victory for Ares. The latter had intended to turn Earth into his version of paradise.

Due to her heroics, Wonder Woman became the first superhero the world ever had. This ended up being relevant to the plot in Justice League, as the rest of the members recognized her role in being Earth’s protector.

Darkseid's Siege Of Earth

What was known as Steppenwolf’s invasion was actually conducted by his master Darkseid. As the rule of Apokolips, he intended to subjugate the Earth as well by combining the energies of the Mother Boxes. The siege’s significance comes from the fact that Earth’s defense involved an incredible alliance.

This included separate civilizations like the Amazons, Atlanteans, Olympians, Green Lantern Corps, and the Yalan Gur. The knowledge of this war was what allowed the heroes in the future to rally and take on Steppenwolf when he returned to invade.

Steve Trevor's Sacrifice

Steve Trevor says his goodbyes to Diana before he dies in Wonder Woman

If there is one relationship that DCEU fans will always be behind it would be Steve and Diana's. His sacrifice was what made her realize that humans do have good in them and not everything had to be related to war and bloodshed.

Everything she did in the future, along with finishing off Ares, had to do with Wonder Woman wanting to keep Steve’s sacrifice alive by being the hero he wanted her to be. All in all, Wonder Woman’s role in the DCEU has to do with this plot point.

Bruce Wayne Finding Out Wonder Woman's Backstory

Wonder Woman’s arc so far has been in accepting her role as a leader and overcoming her sense of defeat by the continued violence around the world. This was kickstarted when Bruce Wayne realized she was looking for a picture of herself and her friends from the first World War.

In his hopes of finding more about her, Bruce also looked into further metahumans and came across Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash. By finding the picture Wonder Woman wanted, Bruce inspired her to return to action, thus paving the way for the Justice League.

The Mother Boxes' Connection To Major Civilizations

Before their official introduction to the series, many had hoped the Mother Boxes would be among the weapons to be added to the DCEU. It turned out their role was vital to the plot, having shaped the civilizations on Earth as the Mother Boxes were housed in separate places.

It was due to Steppenwolf’s claim for the Mother Boxes that Aquaman, Cyborg, and Wonder Woman were spurred into action since they were closely connected to events surrounding these devices. It’s also the thing that got Darkseid’s interest toward Earth.

Ares' Extermination Of The Old Gods

Ares stretches his arms out as fire rages behind him in Wonder Woman.

All things considered, Ares probably deserved a harsher punishment than he got. The Old Gods were able to defend the Earth against Darkseid’s forces in the past, but Ares eventually began killing them off one by one, to the point where none were left.

The premise of Justice League had to do with how Earth was vulnerable since no celestial beings remained and Superman was dead. Ares’ actions ultimately did allow his sister to finish him off and be part of the Justice League in the future.

The Justice League's Formation

The Justice League was the most important plot point for the whole DCEU until its titular movie. Many still hold out hope to see a sequel in the future, although the league’s significance in the DCEU can’t be diminished. Their formation was the story that united the heroes.

Wonder Woman embraced her identity due to having peers with similar powers and motives. Superman was resurrected because of the league’s efforts while Batman overcame his own issues with metahumans. Of course, the likes of Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg were all introduced to the series due to the Justice League’s formation.

The Death Of Superman

This storyline was one of the most popular in the comics and it was hoped to be adapted in the DCEU. It did end up happening, with Superman fighting Doomsday to the death and perishing to leave the world undefended. His demise also gave way for Amanda Waller’s attempts to commissioning Task Force X.

The build-up to this event was also crucial to the DCEU, as Lex Luthor manipulated both Superman and Batman to fight one another. While this resulted in the Man of Steel’s demise, it also got him allying with Wonder Woman and Batman for what was the precursor to the Justice League.

Zod's Invasion Of Earth

General Zod looking serious in Man of Steel

Very few doubt the claim that Zod was the best villain in the DCEU. His effectiveness was due to his relevance to the plot, as Zod’s invasion of Earth was the catalyst to the things that happened between Batman and Superman.

The destruction caused in the clash between Zod and Superman fueled Batman’s notion that the Man of Steel was a threat to the world. It was Zod’s DNA that Lex Luthor used to create Doomsday, ultimately bringing Wonder Woman and the rest of the heroes.

Batman's "Knightmare"

Unless Zack Snyder’s Justice League finishes up on this angle, it will remain the biggest unresolved question from the DCEU. Bruce Wayne’s motivation to kill Superman came from this vision of the future, where he saw the Earth shattered by an evil Superman and a time-traveling Flash warning Bruce about what was to come.

This plot point was connected to everything from Darkseid’s planned invasion to the fracture of the Justice League, and the deaths of key characters. The quest to eliminate it from coming true had to do with Wonder Woman returning, Superman’s resurrection, and the resultant increases in superhero figures.
