The latest Wonder Woman 1984 images shine a light on Diana's gold costume and wings, in addition to Steve Trevor's (Chris Pine) return from the dead. In spite of being delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Wonder Woman sequel remains scheduled to arrive this summer, albeit in August rather than June. Warner Bros. has only continued to market the film since it was officially postponed in March, releasing brand-new magazine covers and additional glimpses of Gal Gadot back in her DC superhero role.

Once again directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 (like the title implies) picks up in the '80s, e.g. several decades after the events of the first movie (which was set primarily during WWI). Naturally, Diana's sense of fashion evolves to reflect the time period, allowing her to seamlessly blend in with her surroundings. She also gets an armor upgrade in the sequel, with much of the Wonder Woman 1984 marketing so far highlighting her golden armor (something that comes from the DC comic books), on top of her classic battle outfit.

Empire has now unveiled two new photos from Wonder Woman 1984, providing an HD look at her gold wings and helmet. The second of the two images further calls attention to Diana's reunion with Steve, who's somehow alive and the same age he was when he sacrificed his life in the first Wonder Woman movie. You can check those photos out below, along with Gadot's quote to Empire about Diana and how she's changed by the time the sequel picks up.

The first movie was a coming of age, it was Diana becoming Wonder Woman. She was very naive and she didn’t understand the complexities of life. A fish out of water. In this movie, that’s not the case whatsoever. Diana has evolved. She’s much more mature and very wise. However, she’s very lonely. She lost all of her team members and she’s guarded. And then something crazy happens.

That "something crazy" involves Steve coming back to life, and the Wonder Woman 1984 trailer may've already revealed how it happens. The preview shows the film's villain, '80s mogul/life advice guru Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal), holding what could be the Chaos Shard, an item from the DC comic books which allows its user to rewrite reality by granting wishes. Reading between the lines, it appears Maxwell either makes a deal with Diana to bring Steve back or resurrects Steve in an effort to tempt her into giving him whatever he needs to carry out his clearly evil plans. It seems Maxwell also reaches an agreement with Barbara Ann Minerva (Kristen Wiig) in the film, transforming her from a meek scientist into the confident villain Cheetah along the way.

Assuming this is on the right track, one can already see how these plot points fit into Wonder Woman 1984's themes about greed and entitlement in the '80s. According to Pascal, Maxwell is ultimately motivated by greed, yet much of his success comes from his ability to convince people he can give them what they need to become their best selves. For Diana, that's getting Steve back and being able to let her guard down again, as Gadot talked about in her quote to Empire. The larger idea here (being a hero means sometimes giving up the thing you want the most) is far from new territory for superhero films, but thanks to its '80s backdrop, Wonder Woman 1984 has the potential to put a fresh spin on the concept.
