Gal Gadot says that Diana Prince is lonely in Wonder Woman 1984. The sequel will see the Amazonian Princess in the '80s at the height of the Cold War fighting new foes in Maxwell Lord and Barbara Ann Minvera/Cheetah.

Warner Bros. and DC Films' upcoming project had been delayed several times due to a couple of reasons. Even before the coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc and forced Hollywood into an essential standstill, Wonder Woman 1984 was pushed back from November 2019 to June 2020. There were a series of mini-delays after that hoping that the world will go back to normal for it to release in theaters. Ultimately, the Patty Jenkins sequel decided on a simultaneous theatrical and streaming release through HBO Max on Christmas Day — a game plan that has divided the industry.

Aside from battling external adversaries brought in by new threats, Diana will also be taking on the inner struggle of being lonely. Speaking at SiriusXM Town Hall, Gadot reveals the state of mind Diana will have in Wonder Woman 1984 pointing out that she's essentially alone with all her friends either dead or very old.

"I think that she's very lonely cause she doesn't want to engage with any new people. She lost all of her friends from the first movie, just because she's immortal and they all died and she doesn't want to experience the loss again. And she doesn't want to people to be on her to see that she's not aging, et cetera, et cetera. So she's very, very lonely and she's by herself and she's here for an only mission, which is helping mankind be better."

On top of Diana's current social life, her loneliness is also exacerbated by her longing for Steve Trevor, who died a heroic death in Wonder Woman to help her defeat Ares and prevent further bloodshed during World War I. Fortunately, he somehow appears before her again in the '80s, although specifics of how that is possible is still being kept under wraps and being saved for the film itself. Knowing that they couldn't keep Chris Pine's involvement a secret for a long time, Warner Bros. and Jenkins opted to confirm his return from the moment they started principal photography. This way, the conversation is more about how he returns and not on whether or not he'll appear in Wonder Woman 1984.

The loneliness that Diana feels in Wonder Woman 1984 might actually play a part in how Steve returns to her. As revealed about Lord, he's a businessman who sells dreams — and not just the typical kinds as he could also manifest essentially impossible goals and wants from people. Depending on how the film plays it out, this could pave the way for Steve's resurrection, but when Diana realizes that there are strings attached to his unnatural existence in the '80s, she would be forced to say goodbye to Steve again which would be more heartbreaking since she'd have to do it willingly.
