Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) and Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) won't have a romantic relationship in Wonder Woman 1984 contrary to fan theories, director Patty Jenkins reveals. The filmmaker returns to the DCEU after the success of 2017's Wonder Woman as she continues the solo adventures of the Themysciran Princess. The sequel will once again be a period piece set in the 1980s, with Chris Pine reprising his role as the lead character's love interest, Steve Trevor.

In Wonder Woman 1984, Diana will be faced with a brand new adversary in Barbara Ann Minerva aka Cheetah (Kristen Wiig), as well as Pedro Pascal's Maxwell Lord, a powerful businessman in the comics. However, some fans theorized that before the falling out that will pit them against each other, Diana and Minerva will actually be in a romantic relationship - something even Jenkins knows about. Unfortunately for those pushing for the idea, while the director admits she thought about the possibility of pairing up the women, that's not the case in the movie.

Speaking with SFX (via Heroic Hollywood) in light of the nearing release of Wonder Woman 1984 this August, Jenkins touched on coming across this particular fan theory and revealed what she thought about it. However, since the sequel emphasizes Steve's return, they wanted to focus on that love story for Diana instead of introducing a brand new relationship with Cheetah.

“It might have [happened] in a different storyline. But because this storyline was so clearly about Steve (Trevor, played by Chris Pine) coming back, the whole story was about Steve. It’s all a love story with Steve. There wasn’t room for two for Diana.”

Diana speaks with Cheetah in Wonder Woman 1984

In the Wonder Woman 1984 trailer, it's clear that Diana and Minerva are friendly at the beginning of the film, although there's no indication of what might drive them apart. It's an interesting notion that Jenkins is open to pairing up Diana with Cheetah, and with the admission that the filmmaker considered it, fans are now curious how that relationship would've panned out. While there are no romances between the women, it seems like the sequel will tackle separate relationships for the pair. An official movie image implies that Minerva may actually be in love with Lord. Meanwhile, a separate still shows the villain assuming her Cheetah persona to save the cunning businessman from being tied to Diana's Lasso of Truth. Whether or not Minerva's affection is reciprocated is unknown.

As for Diana, there's a big focus on Steve's return - although it's still unclear how he's able to come back following his tragic death in Wonder Woman. Fans have countless theories regarding this matter, but there's still no concrete evidence on the manner of his resurrection. Considering that Diana continues to mourn him during the events of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, chances are the lovers' reunion will be short-lived, setting up fans for another heartbreaking separation for the pair at the end of Wonder Woman 1984.
