Wonder Woman 1984's tie-in novel reveals the film resolving the continuity issue on Diana's past in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Before she starred in her origin story in 2017, Gal Gadot first debuted as the Amazonian Goddess in Zack Snyder's 2016 superhero film. She only had a minor role in the narrative, but it was the springboard for her eventual solo outing the year after.

With this, details revealed about Wonder Woman in Batman V Superman led to what went down in her origin story. However, one particular moment in the movie doesn't exactly add up to subsequent details released about the Themysciran princess. In her debut outing, Diana said that she walked away from humanity 100 years ago, but that doesn't seem to be the case considering that she remained active as a superhero, as seen in Wonder Woman 1984.

The recently-released Wonder Woman 1984: The Junior Novel (via Bleeding Cool) provides new information about the upcoming DCEU film, including a clarification about this particular bit. The book attempts to explain what Diana really meant when she said she walked away from humanity, clarifying that this doesn't necessarily mean that she checked out on her responsibility as a superhero. Instead, she more likely just shut down herself from the world, not creating any more personal relationships to protect herself from heartache as her friends grow older and eventually die while she's essentially an immortal.

This effectively resolves the continuity problem between Batman V Superman and subsequent Wonder Woman adventures. Granted that the explanation sounds like a bit of a stretch, it still works as a retcon to what was established in the Snyder movie. Given that continuity in the DCEU isn't as stringent as MCU's, Warner Bros. could've simply left the issue and moved on with what they deem canon, but it's good that they're making effort to present a cohesive overall narrative. It's also an indication that the studio is still concerned about maintaining a single continuity - at least when it comes to the DCEU. In any case, aside from this, Diana's story has been consistent throughout and fans can only expect that Wonder Woman 1984 will build on what was established in Wonder Woman considering that director Patty Jenkins also helmed the sequel.

Given this new information, it's curious to see what kind of life Diana is living in Wonder Woman 1984. Based on the trailers, it appears like she'll develop a genuine friendship with Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) - whom she met at work. What makes this more interesting is that she trusts her enough to share her love affair with Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) - which will make their eventual falling out worse. Finally, fans are looking forward to how the film will lead to the events of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.
