WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Wolverine #16!

Logan has been a staple of Marvel ComicsX-Men for years, but that doesn’t mean Wolverine is going to always get along with all of his teammates - especially not Emma Frost. Emma and Wolverine have fought side-by-side for years, but that’s the extent of their camaraderie. Though they have more in common than some fans may realize, that doesn’t change the fact that they’ll never be the best of friends.

Though Wolverine has made it clear that he’s ready to leave the X-Men at a moment’s notice, at the end of the day, they’re still his family. But Marvel Comics families don’t always have the healthiest dynamics. With one throwaway line, Wolverine #16 by Benjamin Percy and Adam Kubert proves that the X-Men are no different.

After spending the previous few issues dealing with the schemes of Solemn and Sevyr Blackmore, Logan heads to Hellfire Bay to replace Emma’s lost Marauder vessel with an Arakki pirate ship. As he approaches the White Queen’s Palace by sea, Wolverine thinks to himself, “She and I will never be mistaken for friends. But here on Krakoa, no matter our past and despite all our differences, we’re all united in the same fight.” Although it’s a reassuring statement that they’ll have each other’s backs as X-Men, it does highlight an underlying tension between the two classic characters.

Wolverine and Emma Frost have been through plenty of tough times. Having served together since the start of Grant Morrison and company’s seminal New X-Men run, these pair have saved the world together more times than they, or even the fans, can probably count. Even so, it’s highly possible that Logan still hasn’t forgiven Emma for her part in the dissolution of Jean Grey's relationship with her infamous husband, Cyclops. After all, Cyclops had a psychic affair with Emma right under his wife's nose before Jean's death.

When Jean sacrificed herself, Cyclops and Emma made their relationship official soon after - something that Logan immediately found disrespectful to Jean’s memory. While it seems to be water under the bridge now, Logan isn’t the type of person to let things go, and it’s still highly likely that he resents Emma for the pain that she helped cause someone he loves. And it's also highly possible that Logan is still holding onto some enmity against Emma Frost thanks to her past with the Hellfire Club.

Despite all this, both characters came from haunted criminal pasts prior to their time as X-Men, so it’s not surprising that the two have been able to understand one another for so long without ever truly getting alone. While Logan and Emma Frost are two of the X-Men’s most popular characters, that doesn’t automatically make them too popular with each other. But whenever Wolverine and the White Queen set aside their differences, there’s a whole world of trouble waiting for anyone who gets in their way.
