Wolverine isn't exactly known for making friends with his enemies, preferring to slice them to pieces rather than sit down and have a reasoned debate. But recent events have changed that, and while Logan is packing an all new, guilt-free license to kill, he's also way less likely to need it, since the mutant nation of Krakoa has forged alliances between pretty much every X-gene-carrying character - hero or villain - in Marvel's canon.
In terms of character and plot development, it's been a huge step forward for Wolverine, who's moved on to new enemies and a brand new sense of purpose, but it does mean it'll be a long time - likely years - before some of Wolverine's best sparring partners are once again in his sights. Chief among these losses is the Silver Samurai; a villain many fans will know from his portrayal by Haruhiko Yamanouchi in The Wolverine alongside Hugh Jackman's Logan. So fans will be thrilled to know that an upcoming flashback adventure will see the two clash one more time.
In previews shared by Monkeys Fighting Robots, Marvel Comics' Wolverine: Black, White, & Blood #3 is revealed to include a rematch between Wolverine and the Silver Samurai, who in the comics can use his mutant powers to channel huge amounts of energy through his sword. The story, titled "32 Warriors and a Broken Heart," is from John Ridley and Jorge Fornes, and is just one in the anthology series, which combines big-name writers and artists for stories that, as the title promises, are depicted in black, white, and blood red. Wolverine and the Silver Samurai have a long and complicated relationship in the comics, sometimes working as allies - often brought together by Mariko Yashida, Wolverine's love and Silver Samurai's half-sister - and at other times such bitter enemies that Wolverine once cut off the Samurai's hand to make a point.
The Silver Samurai has become the master of Krakoa's barbaric Crucible - in which de-powered mutants"32 Warriors and a Broken Heart," is from John Ridley and Jorge Fornes win the right to be reborn in death matches - making it his role to dispatch any applicant who wants to fight for a better life, but given that Wolverine's service to Krakoa guarantees him immediate resurrection (and Silver Samurai has mocked the idea of the two coming to blows), this is a rare chance to see the Silver Samurai back in action, and an especially rare chance to see him go up against Logan, given the two are both firmly committed to Krakoa's interests. "32 Warriors and a Broken Heart," promises to be an epic bloodbath when it releases online and in stores February 10, and is a must-read for fans of Wolverine's classic enemies, and especially his adventures in Japan.
