Russos Are Most Interested in Directing Wolverine Out Of Heroes Not Yet in MCU

Wolverine Brown and Orange Comic Suit

The directing duo of Joe and Anthony Russo revealed that Wolverine is the one Marvel character not currently in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that they’re most interested in making a movie about. While the team behind Avengers: Endgame have indicated they’re stepping away from superhero movies for now, they’ve left the door wide open for another collaboration in the future.

Ever since Disney acquired 21st Century Fox assets for more than $71 billion, a lot of speculation has been devoted to what the deal would mean for the major franchises under Fox’s banner. Perhaps none more so than the X-Men, and none more than Wolverine in particular. Audiences have openly discussed their desire to see the metal-clawed mutant revitalized with a fresh big screen adaptation. Notable actors, already famous for playing other comic book characters, like Jason Momoa and Evan Peters have expressed interest in putting their own spin on the role made famous by Hugh Jackman. The Russo brothers might have the same idea.

During an AMA session on Reddit, when asked about which superhero they’d most like to direct that they haven’t yet, Anthony Russo was straightforward in his endorsement. “We’ve always loved us some Wolverine,” he replied. Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, confirmed in a recent earnings call that some of Fox’s topline properties are now part of Marvel Studios. That would include Deadpool, Fantastic 4, and X-Men. While there are no concrete plans yet to fold those characters and their worlds into the ever-expanding MCU, the addition of Wolverine may prove more seamless than others.

Wolverine, Captain America, and Iron Man Crossover

With the release of Logan a few years ago, the arc for Wolverine that began in the first X-Men movie reached its end. Widely praised by critics and getting an Oscar nomination for its screenplay, Logan provided closure for fans and for Hugh Jackman who has repeatedly stated he is stepping away from the role he’s long been associated with. Whenever an MCU movie centered around the X-Men is announced and if it’s successful enough to lead to a spin-off, it’s quite likely that Wolverine will be different from the one audiences have grown familiar with.

The adjustment to a new Wolverine would require skillful direction, which the Russos have been proven to possess in spades. The brothers, known initially for helming some of Community’s funniest episodes, are now highly sought after. That makes sense given their names have been linked to some of Marvel Studios’ biggest successes. As their first post-Endgame project, they’ll be reuniting with Tom Holland for an autobiographical drama focused on an army medic that suffers from severe PTSD. The film will be titled Cherry. Perhaps they'll return to the MCU in the future, though, for Wolverine.
