New 'Wolverine' Images Feature Nice Japan Scenery & Bloody Claws

The Wolverine - Logan in Snowy Japan Winter

Hot on the heels of a new image from The Wolverine featuring Logan flashing some (gasp!) blood-stained claws, we now have a more extensive gallery of new images to shared - including an official look at those much-discussed bloody claws (a first for the X-Men movie universe).

The new film finds Logan (Hugh Jackman) in an uncertain place following the events of X-Men 3; with so many friends (both new and old) dead, Logan begins to question his life as a semi-immortal killing machine. That search for direction leads him to the shores of Japan, and into the crosshairs of an old enemy that will strike at Wolverine like never before.

Director James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma) recently revealed that the much-anticipated Wolverine trailer will be released at the end of March. Fans have been (yearning for? Worrying about?) what said trailer will reveal: one of the better X-Men (and/or comic book) movies we've seen thus far? Or a lackluster project that makes us all wish for the Darren Aronofsky/Christopher McQuarrie version that was once compared to being, "Kurosawa's Wolverine"? We'll soon have a better idea of which way things will go.

For now, Check out the new Images:

The production photo of Jackman standing in the rain by an ovular window seems like a behind-the-scenes peek at a moment in the film which was recently highlighted by another promotional image, depicting the finished scene:

Hugh Jackman as 'The Wolverine'

From the set design to the darker cinematography to the bloodier action and the impressive physique of Hugh "I-am-jacked-man," it at least seems like Mangold has done something excited with this next chapter of the X-Men movie saga.

Here's hoping that A) the trailer further indicates as much and B) if successful, The Wolverine influences the tone and shape of Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past (also starring Jackman), helping to deliver a much-improved X-Men movie universe.

The Wolverine will be in theaters on July 26, 2013.
