Legendary Wolverine writer Larry Hama will revisit the character in this September’s X-Men Legends #7. Hama, whose work on Wolverine in the 1990s stands as one of the definitive interpretations of the character teams up with artist Billy Tan for one more story that will send Logan to Japan in search of missing mutants and bring him face to face with some of his greatest foes.

Larry Hama has had a long and distinguished career in comics. He is best known as the writer for Marvel’s long-running G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero comic; he also wrote biographical sketches for the toy line’s characters as well. He has worked on many characters, especially for Marvel, including Venom and Iron Fist. Hama also wrote Wolverine’s solo title for much of the 1990s, starting with issue 31 and running through 118. His run is fondly remembered and considered to be definitive by some fans. Recently, Marvel launched X-Men Legends, a new series that brings back classic X-Men creators to tell new stories set during their run. Previous issues have featured 90’s X-Men scribe Fabian Nicieza return to the “Third Summers Brother” arc as well as Louise and Walter Simonson returning to X-Factor. These stories tie up loose ends and provide fresh insights, and in issue seven, Larry Hama returns to the character he helped define.

A Marvel press release offers up tantalizing details about the story, which will see Wolverine team up with Jubilee and head to Japan on the trail of two young mutants. The duo runs afoul of Lady Deathstrike and the Hand, who have also taken an interest in the children. Now, Wolverine and Jubilee must rescue the children from the Hand and avoid setting off an international incident.

X-Men Legends, Wolverine, Larry Hama

The story, with a focus on Wolverine fighting ninjas, is classic Hama. Larry Hama’s Wolverine run is fondly remembered by fans today and Hama’s return in X-Men Legends 7 will most certainly please them. The cover, by artist Billy Tan, harkens back to Hama’s heyday, showing Wolverine and Jubilee duking it out with Lady Deathstrike and a horde of Hand soldiers. Hama chronicled many of Wolverine’s epic battles with Deathstrike and the Hand, and now he is back, ready to put Wolverine through his paces one more time.

Marvel’s new X-Men Legends series is a dream come true for long-time X-Men fans, providing new stories set during classic eras by that era’s creative teams, and now Larry Hama returns in issue seven to Wolverine. X-Men Legends 7 will be on sale in print and digital this September.
