Wolverine and the Hulk have finally gotten their comic book rematch. Wolverine made his debut in 1974, when he was introduced as a potential enemy for the Hulk. At the time he was working on behalf of the Canadian government, and they'd assigned him to neutralize the Hulk when he arrived in Canada.

The two have since crossed paths many times. But the last few years have seen a dramatically changed status quo for both rival superheroes; both were killed and resurrected, and their respective worlds have changed. Wolverine has settled on the mutant nation of Krakoa, and he's one of the key operatives in X-Force, the mutant version of the CIA. The Hulk, meanwhile, has learned that he's functionally immortal; he literally cannot be killed. Every time Bruce Banner dies, he will wake up as the Hulk when night sets.

Marvel's recently published Voices one-shot finally sees the two superheroes go head-to-head. The Hulk has settled in Madripoor, embracing his Joe Fixit persona, and he's grown irritated at Krakoa's influence on the island nation. He decides to block the Krakoan gateway in order to invite a response, and is delighted when he gets one; the X-Men send Wolverine to deal with the problem. Wolverine initially rampages through the Hulk's hoodlums, before finding himself confronted by the Hulk. The battle lasts through the night - and when the sun rises, the Hulk reverts back to Bruce Banner.

Hulk Wolverine Krakoa

Banner has been hiding out on Madripoor for more than a month, figuring no one would bother to look for him on an island of murderers and thieves. He'd hoped to keep the Hulk occupied with an unending supply of villains and thugs for him to punish at night. But, unfortunately, he'd reckoned without the Joe Fixit persona; the Grey Hulk was unsatisfied with these hoodlums, not considering them enough of a challenge. Banner would much rather stay in Madripoor, but Wolverine correctly deduces the Hulk will just keep causing trouble - especially now he knows blocking a gate really will get his attention. He takes extreme measures, killing Banner, knowing he'll wake up as the Hulk the next night - by which time Logan will have made sure the corpse is a long way away from Madripoor.

Marvel's Voices one-shot is a fascinating comic, and its take on Wolverine and the Hulk is an interesting one. This particular short story is written by David F. Walker and Chuck Brown, but unfortunately its characterization doesn't quite feel right. Fortunately, the stunning artwork by Sanford Greene more than makes up for the story.
