Kingsman star Taron Egerton becomes the X-Men’s Wolverine in new fan art from BossLogic. Thanks to Disney’s acquisition of Fox, X-Men fans are dreaming of the day when their favorite mutant characters might join the MCU, leading to the kinds of crossovers folks could previously only dream about.

Unfortunately, after the dismal box office performance of this year’s Dark Phoenix, the chances of the X-Men joining the MCU in the near future seem distant at best. Indeed, when Marvel revealed future movie plans at last weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, there was no hint whatsoever of the X-Men among the newly announced titles, and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige conspicuously made little mention of the property. Nevertheless, fans will continue speculating about what might happen if the X-Men ever do get folded into the MCU, and will go on with the process of fan casting their favorite X-Men characters.

If in fact the X-Men ever do join the MCU, fans seem to have already chosen Egerton as the man to play Logan aka Wolverine. Indeed, a rumor recently circulated that Egerton was set to take on the role, but Egerton himself came out to shoot down the report. Egerton’s debunking of the Wolverine rumor didn't stop fan artist BossLogic from coming up with his own image of what the Kingsman star might look like as Logan. Original Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman would probably approve of the art, as he seemingly took a shine to Egerton when they worked together on Eddie the Eagle. See BossLogic’s art in the space below, as well as a fun image of Jackman horsing around with his possible Wolverine successor Egerton:

Of course, Jackman became so iconic in the role of Wolverine, which he played in 11 movies overall, that it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing the character. Indeed, Wolverine seemed to be retired forever when he died in the 2017 box office smash Logan. But of course, the fact that Wolverine died in Logan doesn’t really mean anything, as the character can easily be resurrected in another timeline (the X-Men cinematic timeline is already so convoluted thanks to time travel scenarios that, in fact, there really is no firm “timeline” in the franchise). And even if Wolverine were not resurrected by the magic of storytelling, he could always be portrayed at an earlier point in his life. All the other main X-Men characters were of course already given younger onscreen versions when the franchise transitioned to a new cast with X-Men: Days of Future Past, with Jackman’s Wolverine alone being allowed to remain the same age (a move that was justified by the character being ageless and nearly indestructible).

If Egerton were to make fan dreams come true and portray Wolverine, it would no doubt be a daunting acting challenge given how iconic Jackman’s portrayal already is. But of course, Egerton has already proven his fearlessness in portraying icons with his depiction of Elton John in the hit film Rocketman. It would be fascinating to see Egerton tackle the role of Wolverine, and put his own spin on a character who's become so familiar thanks to Jackman.
