Spoilers for Avengers #37 ahead!

Wolverine has a long history with the Phoenix Force, and now he is out to end it once and for all. At the conclusion of Avengers #37, by writer Jason Aaron (Scalped), artist Javier Garron (Miles Morales: Spider-Man) and colorist Jason Keith (Maestro) Moon Knight, having seized control of The Phoenix Force in the prior issue, relinquishes it, and now it must find a new host. Previous host Jean Grey knows it will not come for her this time and is seeking someone new. Wolverine has seen first-hand what the Phoenix Force can do to someone, and he's vowing to stop it.

Under the influence of the God of Vengeance Konshu, Moon Knight went on a rampage against the Avengers, his former friends, stealing their powers, with the intention of confronting and destroying Mephisto. This crusade brought him into conflict with the likes of Thor, Iron Fist, and Black Panther. While he was unsuccessful in defeating Panther, he was still able to steal many other’s powers and weapons, and in the finale of the last issue, Moon Knight stole one of the powerful forces in the Marvel Universe: The Phoenix Force!

This powerful force takes a toll, both physically and mentally, on its host, and Moon Knight is no different. As the Phoenix Force rolls and rage inside of him, he finds himself contemplating genocide-and at that moment he realizes “I have truly lost my mind.” Moon Knight realizes Konshu was his enemy all along - forcing him into a campaign of madness against the Avengers. But the Phoenix Force was able to free Moon Knight from Konshu’s clutches, and now free from all outside influences, he decides he is now “a man without a god.”

But now the Phoenix Force is roaming free, and it quickly comes to the attention of the X-Men. From their Summer House on the Moon, Jean Grey senses the Force will not bond with her again - and being a previous host, she would know. While she muses over who the new host might be, Wolverine tells her he has other plans - he accuses the Force of using people and then discarding them, regardless of what shape they’re left in. Wolverine has clearly had enough and is he going to destroy the Force once and for all.

Having seen several of his friends be hosts for the Force, Wolverine has some expertise in this area. His motivations are well-intentioned; too many lives have been ruined or destroyed by the Phoenix Force. How exactly Wolverine intends to do this remains to be seen, but Marvel has made it clear the Avengers’ issues with the Force are just beginning, and it will be interesting to see how Wolverine, himself a former Avenger, plays into this.
