One of the most brutal members of the X-Men is undoubtedly Wolverine as his mutant powers allow him to throw himself into a fight without being worried about being permanently injured. Despite this near-immortality, Wolverine has died before in the comics, and one death upgraded the powers of his forgotten apprentice. The previously immortal Wolverine died after he caught a virus from the microverse that eliminated his mutant healing factor, giving the villains of his past a chance to kill him once and for all. In the days and weeks following his death, a number of X-Men reflect on the time they spent with him, including Wolverine’s forgotten apprentice, Armor.

In the Death of Wolverine: Life After Logan comic one shot filled with three separate stories of X-Men in mourning, there is one story that follows Armor through her grieving process titled, “A Little Piece of You” by Rex Ogle and Patrick Scherberger. Hisako Ichiki aka Armor has the mutant ability to form armor around her body that has been described as deriving from a combination of her mutant ability and magic. Part of her powers include feeling when other people die, and the closer they are to her the more she feels it. In the issue, Armor is telling Julian Keller aka Hellion that she felt it strongly when Logan died, but she also said that something else happened to her upon his death, she got stronger.

Upon the tragic death of Wolverine, Hisako's armor became even stronger with the added ability to manifest energy claws. She experienced a power surge just like this one in the past, one which involved her entire family being massacred at once which gave her a massive power boost. As Hisako explains in the one-shot, she never got an upgrade from the death of anyone but her family before. Logan took Armor under his wing and trained with her one-on-one until she was ready to become a member of the X-Men, and their connection meant so much to her, that even the powers she didn't fully understand picked up on that connection and offered her a power increase upon his death.

Not only did Armor’s power increase from Logan’s death, but from that moment on he became a part of her as his life force gave Armor the upgrade. As loosely explained to her and to fans, Armor’s powers are partially spiritual so they can access other realms and allow her to feel the deaths of those closest to her while also giving her access to a portion of their life force that she in turn uses as a power upgrade. Wolverine’s death alone didn’t upgrade Armor, but the life force he left behind increased her power, meaning a piece of her fallen apprentice will always be with her.

Since the Death of Wolverine storyline was released, Wolverine has died and come back a few times including in the fairly new House of X/Powers of X storyline in which Logan fell into the sun trying to stop the rise of a sentinel army. In fact, an all-new storyline centered around the life and death of Wolverine called The X Lives of Wolverine/The X Deaths of Wolverine will explore the countless deaths and resurrections of the character. While Wolverine’s death didn’t stick and will be the focal point of an all-new upcoming storyline, it felt very real and significant to Armor at the time and she used the death of her fallen master to as a way to grow, become stronger, and carry a piece of Wolverine with her for the rest of her life.
