Warning: SPOILERS For Hunt For Wolverine: Weapon Lost #2

-

The Hunt For Wolverine is in full swing in the Marvel Universe, as everyone is teaming up to try and find the body of the mutant Logan, stolen (or risen) from his grave. In this week's Hunt For Wolverine: Weapon Lost #2 readers get their first look at Logan back in action... and slaughtering the mutant Cypher.

For those who missed it, Wolverine died all the way back in 2014, with his body ending up encased in adamantium and set up as a monument to the hero. Earlier this year the X-Men revealed they removed Logan's body from the metal, and placed him in a separate grave.

A grave that now sits empty.

Multiple teams have formed across the Marvel Comics Universe to try and find Wolverine - back from the dead. As well as an all-female X-Men team searching for Wolverine in Madripoor (in Hunt For Wolverine: Mystery In Madripoor), Tony Stark has teamed up with Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Spider-Man to see if anyone is trying to sell Wolverine's genetic material (in Hunt For Wolverine: Adamantium Agenda), Daredevil is leading his own team to seek out Logan in the Canadian wilderness (Hunt For Wolverine: Weapon Lost).

Daredevil leads Misty Knight, Cypher and Frank McGee up to Saskatchewan thanks to Cypher, who uses his ability to 'speak Internet' to tap into every possible Wolverine sighting in the world - allowing the team to seek out the most promising leads. They are led to Canada thanks to a distress call from a cabin, and arrive to find everyone there dead... but that's not the end of the bloodshed. While Daredevil leads the other team members after Wolverine's scent, he tells Cypher to remain behind where it is safe.

However, the mutant has become addicted to the internet, and sneaks off the plane to take a phone from one of the dead bodies. It is at that moment that we hear the inimitable sound of Wolverine's claws, as Cypher's throat is slit and Wolverine stands over the body.

Hunt for Wolverine death of Cypher

It's a tragic moment for Cypher, who had already begun to lose his mind to his online addiction. But it also tells the reader plenty about Wolverine's current mental state. It seems that Wolverine is not only alive again (something that fans already knew thanks to Marvel's upcoming Wolverine titles), but that he is most definitely NOT feeling particularly friendly. He slaughtered a cabin full of people for no obvious reason, and has now topped it off by killing a mutant who was once a hero of the X-Men.

Interestingly, he's not out of his mind or acting like a frightened animal; he planned a way to lead Daredevil and the others away from the cabin as a trap, and wasn't being threatened by Cypher when he killed him. He also tells Cypher that he knows who he is, suggesting that this has been an elaborate ploy to try and get Cypher alone so he can be taken out of the equation... making it much harder for Daredevil and his team to find their target.

So... Wolverine is back! And he's extra violent (or simply lacking in any moral compass) but otherwise mentally intact. We can also confirm without question that whatever he's up to, he does not want to be found. It's worth saying that it's possible this hulking, clawed figure isn't the true Wolverine. In the comic universe, there is always the possibility of a clone or shape-shifter being the one causing all this chaos, but we'll have to wait for the final two issues of Marvel's Hunt For Wolverine: Weapon Lost to find out.
