Contains a preview of Midnight Suns #4!

The X-Men's resident brawler Wolverine is getting new, enchanted armor that gives his claws a demonic upgrade as one of the Midnight Suns. Marvel's premier supernatural team are re-assembling ahead of their videogame debut, as Wolverine joins Ghost Rider, Blade, Magik, and more to tackle zombie sorcerer Zoe Laveau.

While Wolverine is an unexpected inclusion on this roster of eldritch-adjacent heroes, his metallic claws actually give him a surprising advantage over mystical threats, as many forms of magical life are weak to metal. However, those claws will also be getting a magic upgrade in an upcoming issue, along with the weapons of heroes including Blade and Magik, who'll be embracing a new red and black color scheme in an attempt to forestall the apocalypse.

Artist David Nakayama recently revealed the cover art for the upcoming Midnight Suns #4 on Twitter, which depicts the three heroes in armor designed by the artist. While this cover image is a striking one which shows the team finally united by a shared uniform, a summary of the issue from League of Comic Geeks confirms the costume change will come with extra powers, describing "mysterious new powers granted by their magic-forged extradimensional armor.

Wolverine's Red Claws Are A Supernatural Boost

It's not yet clear what upgrades the mystical armor will give the team's blades, but as it seems they will be lost in time and space, it's possible their weapons will do anything up to slicing through reality itself to get them back in the fight. Enjoy the issue summary below:

The apocalypse is finally here, and ZOE LAVEAU's at the center of it all. AGATHA HARKNESS will sacrifice everything, including herself, to stop it. What does Zoe dare risk? There's a terrible secret at the heart of Zoe's vision, a secret that threatens to change the Marvel Universe forever. Meanwhile, the MIDNIGHT SUNS race across all of time and space to get back in this fight? With a little help from the mysterious new powers granted by their magic-forged extradimensional armor! But if they return, who will be friend and who will be foe?!

Wolverine has upgraded his claws before, especially when up against supernatural threats. Indeed, it was only recently that Wolverine infused his claws with Ghost Rider's flames, and he's even channeled the power of the Iron Fist through his retractable blades. In each case, Logan's claws were granted the ability to slice and dice intangible spirits, and it seems a safe bet that his extradimensional armor will include this ability. However, given Magik's sword already possesses this power and Blade doubtless already has anti-ghost weaponry, it's a safe bet this won't be the only upgrade on the table. In the past, Wolverine has been able to naturally super-heat his claws, and it's possible his new mystical upgrade will put a new spin on their fiery potential.

Wolverine is famously a lone wolf, but it seems that when matching uniforms offer him a deadly new power level, he's unable to refuse officially becoming part of the team. The Midnight Suns deal with threats many Marvel heroes couldn't even fathom, and that means adopting tactics and equipment even hardcore heroes would balk at. It seems that to keep pace with the newest iteration of the Midnight Suns, Wolverine's claws will need an upgrade - one fans will doubtless be dying to see as the issue approaches.

Midnight Suns #4 is coming from Marvel Comics December 28.
