He’s the best there is at what he does, and what Wolverine does best is hunt - even if he has to commandeer Iron Man's armor and duke it out with Namor the Sub-Mariner to track down the villain behind Civil War. As an iconic loner, Logan is notoriously gruff and not the easiest guy to work with. But when one quest for vengeance took him to the depths of Atlantis wearing Iron Man’s armor, Wolverine proved his unrelenting reputation is earned.
After the criminal Nitro uses his power to kill hundreds of people at the onset of Marvel’s Civil War event, Wolverine takes it upon himself to hunt him down and discover where he got the Mutant Growth Hormones that supercharged his powers. After more than a few setbacks, Logan finds himself coming face to face with the one thing he never expected - Atlanteans. In Wolverine #45 by Marc Guggenheim and Humberto Ramos, the Wolverine confronts his aquatic adversaries on their own turf.
After Wolverine tracks Nitro to a small cabin alongside a SHIELD strike team, the situation quickly spirals out of control as the killer vaporizes all of his attackers, badly injuring Logan. While the X-Man eventually heals back from his skeletal form and interrogates a weakened Nitro, they’re soon interrupted by the arrival of Namor and a squad of Atlanteans seeking revenge for the murder of his cousin, Namorita. Despite Logan’s best efforts, Namor’s forces take Nitro back to Atlantis with Wolverine soon following after borrowing one of Tony Stark’s submersible Iron Man armors. Once there, Logan confronts the Atlantean king and his trusted soldiers, and despite fighting his way to Nitro, chooses to leave the villain in their clutches (minus one hand) after Namor points out his arrogance in invading a sovereign nation.
While Logan eventually realizes it’s not up to him to punish Nitro for his crimes, this entire debacle really highlights just how relentless Wolverine can be when he really sets his sights on a goal. Not only did he track Nitro despite the express orders of Cyclops and Iron Man, but he even went toe-to-toe with a powerhouse like Namor when he considered the Atlantean an obstacle. His tenacity isn't just physical, either, as he talks Iron Man into giving him submersible armor by leveraging the existence of Atlantean sleeper cells.
With his powerset, there are few foes that could really put Wolverine down for good. Naturally, that sort of durability comes with an expected level of confidence, strengthening the conviction that Logan is known for. But while Iron Man's contribution helps Wolverine compete underwater, drowning is one of the few fates that have been shown to have a chance of killing him for good, with this mission showing that Logan's warrior spirit isn't just arrogant dependence on his healing factor, but a willingness to die for what he believes is right.
Sadly, the mission ends in a mess, as Nitro gets free and kills his jailer, forcing Logan to admit that he belongs to the Atlanteans and break his word in leaving the villain to their justice. Thankfully, Namor is impressed enough by his restraint to pass on what Atlantis' jailers learn from their captive, sending him off on another blood-drenched mission to kill the MGH supplier. Although he was punching far outside of his weight class against Namor the Sub-Mariner, that didn’t stop Wolverine from getting the equipment he needed to fulfill his Civil War mission, even if it meant turning to Iron Man at a point where Tony Stark was loathed by much of the hero community.
